| Verbal tips DON'T pay my bills |
I am not one who normally bitches about the tips that people leave me. I appreciate each and every dollar that I make and that people are generous enough to give me.
However...
I am a firm believer in the idea that if you can not afford to tip at least 15% for good service then please order your food to go or cook at home. If you cannot afford 15%, and insist on dining in, then give me what you can and leave. DO NOT...I repeat....DO NOT continue to sit at my bar for another hour and tell me that the service was "amazing".
The government thinks that it is ok for service industry employees to be paid $2.13 an hour. So I live off of my tips.
Seeing as how I live off of the tips that people are generous enough to give me I feel that I should explain something. If you sit at my bar not spending money then you are taking up space for someone who will spend money and therefore may leave me some money; money that I use to pay my bills.
If you sit at my bar and can only afford to tip 7.6% on your $83 tab let me make a few suggestions for you:
- You might consider switching from Hennessy to Remy Martin if you must drink cognac, or from Grey Goose to Absolut. It cuts back on the amount of your bill and enables you to leave a better tip.
- If you insist on drinking the top-shelf liquor and leaving me less than a 15% tip, fine, then do me a favor and leave once you have paid. Please do not continue to sit there taking up space; space that could be occupied by someone else that could leave me money.
- Also verbal tips in no way make up for the lack of money that you have given me. I can't call the electric company or my landlord and tell them I can't afford to pay my bills but that some douchebag told me that I "did a really awesome job".
Please all I ask is that the next time you go out for dinner or drinks keep in mind that your server/bartender lives off of the money that you leave for them. If the service is terrible then that justifies leaving little or no tip. If you receive good or great service then allow your gratitude to reflect in the tip that you leave on the table/bar.
Your friendly neighborhood bartender,
Bonnie Beaver
