| The New Jerusalem |
After the tribulation, 1,000 years of peace is portrayed to happen in Revelations, meanwhile the Devil is locked up and Christ will rule. Satan will then be released from his prison for one last time and will make one last offensive strike against God and his people. Jesus will overthrow him for a third and last time and the dead will be judged. Then John records seeing the old earth and old heaven pass away and are replaced with new versions of each. It is unknown for sure whether John is being literal, as in God will create a literal new planet or if it is just symbolism for a new era occurring on Earth.
What will Life be Like in New Jerusalem?
New Jerusalem will be a practical “heaven on earth”. It says several things about the city in this verse:
*Jesus will live among us (Rev. 21:3)
*No more death or sorrow (Rev. 21:4)
*No thirst or hunger (Rev.21:6)
*No temple (Rev. 21:22)
*No sun or stars but will be illuminated by the light of Jesus (Rev. 21:23)
*Will inherit the glory of the nations, possibly meaning it will have a little bit of a
culture from every nation that is deemed good in Gods eyes. (Rev. 21:26)
What will New Jerusalem look like?
Unlike the Bible’s vague description of Heaven, the descriptions of New Jerusalem are very specific, giving exact measurements for the boundaries of the city. The measurements are 1,400 miles in length and is as wide and as high as it is long. The walls being 200 feet thick.
Twice in Revelations the text describes the city to be “clear” or like “glass” (Rev. 21:11, 21:21) Yet despite it being clear it mentions specific jewels and materials it is made out of:
*The walls will be jasper and the city itself will be gold.
*Decorated with precious stones such as sapphire, chalcedony, emerald, sardonyx, carnelian, chrysolite, beryl, topaz, chrysoprase, jacinth, and amethyst.
*Gates being made out of a single pearl
There will be twelve gates to the city which will remain open at all times but each guarded by twelve angels. On each gate will be inscribed the name of one of the twelve tribes of Israel. There will also be twelve foundations, each named after an apostle. The throne of God will be in the city and the river of life will flow from it and down a major street in the city. On each side of the river the tree of life will grow and bear fruits from its branches.
How will New Heaven tie into this?
Once again concerning the issue of Heaven the bible is not very clear. I would assume that a possible passage between the two cities will exist. Another possibility is that what John meant was the New Heaven and New Jerusalem will be one place. The Bible doesn’t say. However this is a minor matter as the important part is that we will forever live with God for our eternal life.
