| Friendly Advice for Obama |
Dear Mr. president,
A little friendly advice for you. I'm not a "birther" and not convinced by them that you are not a native American citizen, although I've been keeping up on the issue. It appears to me you could shut them up immdeiately by doing two things. Allow access to your academic records only in verifying that you did or did not accept government assistence as an exchange student. Nobody cares what your grades were. You graduated from Harvard and they don't give their diplomas away so we know you're smart already. The second thing is release a valid copy of your birth certificate. This will quell the noise from the birthers. They say you won't release those documents. If that's true, you're refusal to do so creates concern in moderates that you wil need if you are to serve a second term and seems to add validity to "birthers" claims. If there is nothing adverse to hide from then why hide? Remember, neither liberals nor conservatives are a majority in this country so for anyone to be President, they need to get to get moderate votes.
Take me for example. I'm a moderate with slightly right leaning tendencies on many issues, but not all. Rush Limbaugh despises moderate, independent voters. I don't belong to any political party. I didn't vote for you because I didn't feel you had enough experience at that time. However, if you perform well during this term, I will very likely vote for you next time because you will have laid my fears to rest. I don't care what Democrats or Republcans think because I'm very capable of doing my own thinking and I make my voting decisions accordingly. What I do care about very much is how well you perform your duties while in office.
One of your campaign promises to the voters was that you would bring more transparency to government. I liked that. As the highest ranking member of government, as President, you simply aren't going to have the privacy an ordinary citizen has, nor should you. You make decisions that are going to affect all of our daily lives so the more about you we know, the better. Nixon learned that the hard way. Releasing the documents the "birthers" say they need to reassure them would quieten a very vocal opposition group and prove to the people you are keeping your campaign promise of transparency. Conservatives won't like you any more than they do now and liberals won't like you any more than they do now but moderates will be greatly reassured.
