| Star Ocean: The Last Hope Part 1 |
I really don't want to do this one. However, I might as well get it out of the way. Now, this may not seem that bad, in fact, it probably looks good if you've played the first three. Admittedly, None of the games are numbered, but the order for games that you can find is this: Star Ocean: First Departure, Star Ocean: Second Story/Second evoloution, Star Ocean: 'Till the End of Time, and Star Ocean: The Last Hope. The second one has two titles because Second Story is the Playstation game, while Second Evoloution is the PSP port. First Departure is similar in that it is a PSP remake, but do you own a famicom?
So, let's start out. We start with a backstory sequence! Okay, just in case we don't know the story behind the other games, right? No, it drops us off at about 10 S.D. So, this game actually occurs in the past? Well, That's really not unuiqe or unusual in any way.By the way, the Title, "Last Hope", implies it's the final part of the story. Hoiwever, its part in the story is more like part -1. So, we meet Edge Maveric, who is ditching a ceremony to go train. This reminds me of someone, but I can't think who. Another Character walks in, and this character is Remi. This one, I can name who it reminds me of: It reminds me of Rena from So2. She also seems like a playable character, but I'd be glad to have the option not to have her just for the sake of keeping up with Star Ocean tradition. It's mostly story sequence to start off, again, nothing new here. Heck, I spent 2 hours on So2's opening sequence, so I can forgive a long intro. This sequence pretty much introduces us to all of the human main characters: The obligatory Kenny, the role model rival Crowe (who you can't get on your team, again, I at least want the option), the increibly obvious evil chararacter in power Director Shimada (Laugh+Mannerisims+Mustache+group of yes-crones=EVIL!), and it is revealed that you work for the USTA. Makes sense, the other games had that group in them. It is also revealed that the goal here is to find a replacement Earth to make home, due to Earth being to irradiated from World War 2 to inhabit the surface, forcing people to live in the other planets of teh Sol solar system, or live inside Earth. Wouldn't an irradiated surface result in an irradiated undergound too? Anyways, the next rediculous part occurs on the planet you are assigened to search, Planet Aeos: the explanation for anachronistis weapons. You crash-land on planet Aeos and have to search for the other ships that crashed, wich happens automatically. dangit, that might have been a fun intro! Anyways, after a little exploring, a bunch of giant alien beetles attack. The team try their freakin' railguns on the beetles, but they have energy shields! No, actually these beetles are apparrently Chuck Norris Beetles, deflecting the bullets on the pure basis that they hear it coming.
So, what it is trying to tell us: If you have ninja reflexes and can know a bullet is comning, you're immune. This is a worse excuse than the batteries running out in Claude's phase gun in So2.Also, the beetles are easilt taken out when Edge uses a sword on them. If they can delfect Freaking Railgun bullets, how is a sword going to work? Also, your commander makes this observation: The more primitive the tool, the better. So you suggest we start trying to throw rocks at them? Even better: let's just punch them out! You also get characters later that are just as effective as Edge and Remi, but have louger and more obvious weapons like a phase cannon. After bashing the beetles, It turns out that Edge and Remi are the only ones uninjured, so they have to go find the ship. Remi uses a bow and arrows by the way. When th reach the only downed ship left, it turns out they all wnet berzerk and turned into monsters upon finding some meteorite. The person who tells you then then morphs into a giant, armored, animated blob. The trick here is to attack his shiled, and then attack the protruding blob for major damage. Afterwards, they are approaches by an elf on an airship. Am I going to need to stop for a sanity break? He somehow speaks English (Or whatever they speak in the future), but this is explained with a simple explanation: Translators! Yep, just like every other Sci-Fi themed game.
Okay, I'll have to stop here, this post is already too long. Part two tomorrow!
