My nickname is "Gabby". It was originally my brother Bob's because he never said anything. And, when asked why, he always responded, "Talk's cheap." The name was inherited by my next older brother, Ray, and then handed down to me.
I grew up in a small, northeastern Nebraska town called Norfolk. It was first called North Fork, after the town's river. But when the city applied for a Post Office, the government, as usual, screwed-up and designated it Norfolk, as in Norfolk Virginia... Some of my letters still get sent to Virginia.
In the 1940's, the city thought it would be smart to promote itself nationally as "The Pheasant Capitol of America". The birds were then abundant but within two years, big city hunters came in droves and wiped them out.
Norfolk's most famous personality was probably the entertainer, Johnny Carson. I never personnally knew Johnny but he was in high school with my oldest brother. And my parents knew his parents well. As a kid, Johnny was popular for his residential, amateur magic acts. He loved Norfolk and gave it a new YMCA and city museum (which houses most of his many awards and TV show stuff).
....More later.
