Well, today I started my first day as a 2 year old teacher. It was quite an interesting experience. I have never been so tired in all of my life, and today it was just a 2 hour job shadowing that I did to kind of get to know the kids.
I'm sure many of you have heard 'the terrible twos' well let me just tell you, that is completely accurate!! There was yelling, screaming, running, pushing, grabbing things off of shelfs and tables that were 'no no's'. For the most part I would have to say that the little boys meet the mold for 'terrible 2's' moreso than the girls. The girls for the most part are quiet, and tend to listen much better than many of the boys, well for as much listening as 2 year olds are capable of doing. One of the little girls I think even made me her new best friend.
One of the hardest things to do that I noticed today was to enforce some type of discipline and structure. The kids are all so cute, and when they do something wrong sometimes it is very hard to keep a serious face on and tell them No!!
I also learned that when dealing with lots of little kids, you don't want to wear any clothing that is 'nice.' Before the end of the day it will be covered in snot, saliva, paint, glue, etc etc. Tomorrow I will definitely be getting out the jeans and t-shirts.
Today was more unstructured than normal with Christmas being right around the corner. A lot of the art projects had been finished, so the kids were left to do free play most of the morning, so that added to the chaos quite a bit.
Inside the classroom there was the teacher (the lady whose position I am taking) and 2 aides in the classroom. For every 6 kids you need one adult, and this classroom usually ranges between 12 and 15 two year olds....so just imagine the noise and everything associated with 15 little people!!!
Before leaving for the day, I got to observe them getting ready for lunch (since they are so young they have lunch brought into their classroom by the cook). They all got their hands washed, and were all seated waiting for the cook to come in. I was shocked!! I didn't know it was possible to get that many kids, all in their seats, and relatively quiet at the same time!!
The cutest thing by far that I got to observe before leaving was all the kids holding hands with the people sitting next to them and saying their prayer before they ate (it's a Christian preschool).
It was definitely an exciting and exhausting day, and I'm sure I'll have more to write about through these coming weeks as I spend time getting to know the children. It's nice to think that I am helping shape these children, from such a young age, for their futures!! |

awww...I used to be a toddler aid in a daycare...I loved it, it's loud and rowdy but once you get used to it and figure out the correct amount of aspirin needed for an 8 hour day, you get really attached to the little kids and feel a big part of their life...it's a very special thing..Now I have another almost 2 year old in my home, this is my third, she drives me crazy, but I will sure miss it when she grows and I have no more little ones coloring on the walls and biting the dogs....

A word of advice (my ex ran a school of 120 of the little darlings) - take spare clothes with you! - spares of everything! - she got totally peed on twice on her first day. Have a happy day tomorrow! :)
