Well, I was in sociology class they other day and my teacher and majority of my class were discussing societal structures ex. government, school, and church and how much are individual actions are shaped by them. Whether we are aware of it or not.
For example: An eighteen yr. old kids decision to attend college. I don't know about you, but when I entered college I wasn't ready. When I stepped into my first college class I was a mess of nerves and indecision, but was comforted by the fact that I wasn't the only one. Majority of the kids I came into contact with didn't really seem to know what they wanted to do as their first career let alone for the rest of their lives.
Then why was I and why were they there? They answer was simple-money. You would think that if your spending a vast amount of it, sometimes up to, but not limited, to 40 thousand a yr. You would be using it to better yourself intellectually and culturally as an individual. But for most kids my age I dont even think that is a frequent thought in minds.
Its more along the lines of let me get this degree as soon as possible, land a good/secure job, so I dont have to worry about money. Gaining anything intellectually doesn't really seem to be a priority which makes me sad. Because ideally isn't that want school is all about?
Educating yourself, so you can make a positive impact on the world, not just you wallet?
