(Prelude)
Topkon (LOST)

*

Standing in her quarters, gazing over the saddened land, Manda Zola pondered the events of her life. She thought of the events that had brought her to this dreary land that is known as Saldara. More than this, Manda thought of the one true love that had been lost to her. One hundred and fifty years had passed since Manda had last seen Naren, the Holy Knight that had quested to fulfill the prophecy of restoring Topkon to the world.

In the year of the Fallen Gods there was a fighter known as Tie Mont Clair. In his many battles Lord Mont Clair had journeyed many worlds, in many times, lived through many battles. Tie Mont Clair became renowned for his prowess in battle, he became legend that children dreamt of becoming, he became loved by many, hated by others, but most of all Tie Mont Clair became tired. Married to battle for over 500 years the Danaen fighter longed to be free of the clash of arms, to let his body rest and to let both the physical as well as the mental damage be healed before the eternal rest took him. At this time Lord Mont Clair dreamt images of an arena, a battlefield, but beyond that he thought of a challenge that would test every aspect of a warrior, Tapper, Holy Man, Stalker or Mentalist. The first images of Topkon came to Lord Mont Clair.

Manda believed that Lord Mont Clair never knew the full ramifications of the dream that he held so dear. But as he was ambitious in his younger days, Tie Mont Clair became ambitious to fulfill this dream. In his many battles and vast adventures, Mont Clair met a young woman. This woman held fantastic beauty, this woman held fantastic power, most of all this woman held Tie Mont Clair’s heart. He knew that Zavina held power, but he did not know that she was kin to the very gods above, (and below!) It was through Zavina that Topkon was created.

In her thoughts Manda Zola unconsciously brushed the knee length golden blond hair and readjusted the white silk scarf that covered her eyes. She slipped into the thin almost see through silks that covered her body in white. Her delicate body and lush beauty flowed through the room and her mind wandered farther into the past that would soon come crashing back down on her. Manda Zola’s past would not only crash down upon her. All of Saldara would feel the wrath of the gods, the Gods that had fallen from this world eons ago.

Tie Mont Clair met with Zavina on a coral reef near the molten sea of Kandar. It was here that he was introduced to the god Zolton, Zavina’s father. It was here that Lord Mont Clair’s fall from grace had begun. He explained to Zolton the dream of Topkon, a place that would test the skills of all combatants be it melee, magi or mental. He explained a place that would create warriors for the very gods themselves. Zolton admired the idea, as very well thought for a mere mortal. What came next is what ruined the dream that seemed so great.
In her happiness to hear that Tie Mont Clair’s idea had been accepted by her father, Zavina let loose with the news that she and Lord Mont Clair were lovers. Zolton was furious. Because of his rage the sky’s poured rain for 100 hundred days, the molten sea was cooled to a steam that covered the lands for leagues in every direction. Zolton, “the God of Battle” laid a curse on his very own daughter. For her blasphemy of bedding a mortal, Zavina would become that one thing that the mortal dreamed of. Zavina was formed into what is today referred to as the legendary Topkon Corridors. Bound by his love of both Zavina and his dream come true, Tie Mont Clair accepted the duty as High Lord of the corridors.

Sitting at her window Manda could see the past weave its threads through the present, to become the future and finally end as the past once again. She could see the dread in the eyes of the hourglass; she could feel the cold, cold hands of master time as he caressed her ageless face. Manda sought his consult but Master Time had no words, he could only provide the sand as it sifted through the fingers of time.

In his creation Zolton knew that no ordinary mortal could ever handle the vast magical essence of Topkon. Zolton knew that Tie Mont Clair had become a pawn to “the Lord of War”. It was not this mortal’s fault that he stood spell bound over the “Battle Princess”. He could never resist the temptation of the lesser goddess that Zavina was. After all, Lord Mont Clair had considered him self, “married to battle”. Therefore he need not suffer the punishment that was bestowed upon Zavina. Instead he could watch someone else control the very dream that he had lost his love to.

An Arch Mage was summoned, Achilles answered, and Topkon had begun.

Topkon was a towering, perfectly created square block of marble, indestructible red marble from the plane of earth as summoned by Zolton himself. Towering over the surrounding landscape. Topkon was placed in a valley to the west of the molten sea of Kandar. The interior of Topkon was plain, but vast. The entrance was a long corridor with light blue walls and dark blue floors. The corridor gave way to an immense circular chamber, a podium upon witch held two red velvet high backed chairs centered this chamber and flanking those were two blue low backed chairs on each side. The floor of the chamber was red marble and the circular walls were light blue, centered and evenly spaced numbers were placed on the walls in dark blue marble, the numbers began at one and ended at fifteen. Upon the two red chairs sat Lord Mont Clair and Master Achilles, at the feet of Master Achilles sat a child with golden blond hair.

Manda Zola remembered her place with Master Achilles he was her only kin. Master Achilles was Manda’s uncle. He had taken her to Topkon for her own good, to protect her from the world. What better place to find protection than a place created by a god. “Fool, Uncle Achilles” she thought with affection “You knew I could take care of my self.” It was the very essence of Topkon and the godly influenced power that eroded his mind. Master Achilles was not as sharp witted as he once was.

The godly calling that summoned an adventurer to battle in the corridors of Topkon was irresistible, irresistible until you were there and learned the rules. The three rules, “1. Only one may enter,” “2. You may quit only if you ask the permission of Lord Mont Clair,” “ 3. If you enter a corridor, you must kill or be killed.”

The reward was as godly as the test itself. An individual who finished all fifteen corridors consecutively and lived would be granted one wish of his or her dreams. The only wish that would not be granted was control of Topkon. But what lay behind the doors to the corridors of this “Arena of the Gods.” ONLY THOSE WHO ENTERED WOULD EVER KNOW! Only one had ever completed the test, only one had ever been the true Champion of the corridors.

The tear that Manda held for that champion would not fall. The tear that could not fall was for her champion, Naren Un Dunar, the only person to have won the title of Champion of the Gods, the only person to win her love, and the one that she sent to his certain death. Certain death in the defense of Topkon and to a quest that even a Champion of the God’s could never hope to fulfill. He could never complete the quest because she had purposely meant for him to fail in his mission.

Laree was the Mistress of greed, Demi-goddess of envy, and the Demi-goddess of contempt. It was Laree who took personal interest in the corridors of Topkon. It was she who plotted against Zolton.

Manda Zola had been touched by the hand of time himself; yes Master Time had blessed her. Or was it a curse? She watched the events of Topkon’s demise, She saw the evil before it ever bloomed in full. It was Manda who had foiled Laree’s plot and for her vision into the future, Laree had taken Manda’s physical vision.

Mistress Greed had convinced Zolton that even Achilles should not possess such a powerful domain such as Topkon. She contested that the power of the corridors would corrupt a mere mortal. Laree offered the assistance of a group of nine volunteers. These nine were the essence of power; the gods themselves created them. The nine could only be summoned by the planting of a Lythrea tree.

Manda saw the events happen, watched them unfold. She knew that the nine volunteers were a plan to bring the power of Topkon under Laree’s control. With that power she could gain full status and be a Demi-goddess no more. Her plan would wreak havoc on the lands, because the nine volunteers were not just powerful, they were the epitome of every alignment known. These creatures were known as the Dragon Nine and although there was one for every alignment, the balance would not allow a lawful member of the nine to interfere with the doings of a chaotic member! Therefore destruction was inevitable. Manda could not allow that.

Zolton went to Achilles and instructed him to send Naren to the third level of the Abyss to retrieve the seed of the Lythrea Tree which had been captured and contained by the fiend who ran the plain. Manda went to Tie Mont Clair and told of the plot that Laree had set in motion, but Achilles had already been charmed by Laree. Tie Mont Clair was dismissed from Topkon by a powerful spell that sent him in search of all Dragon kind, to slay them and rid the world of them. The Dragon Nine were to be the only Dragon Kind on this plane of existence.

Naren, joined with a powerful Stalker know as Blane. Together they set out on their journey to recover the seed of the Lythrea. After Naren and Blane had left the prime material plane, Naren fell ill. In his illness he fell in to deep dreamless sleep. Blane was touched by a spell that made him forget the mission that he was on. Instead he fell into another journey and after leaving Naren in his quarters, Blane also forgot that he ever knew a Holy Knight named Naren or that he ever heard of the domain called Topkon.

It was Manda who was responsible for Naren’s illness and Blane’s memory loss. She cast these spells for fear that they would succeed in their quest and therefore set the Dragon nine loose upon the world.
When Lyree, the mistress of greed found out about the treachery, she took her wraith out upon the very walls of Topkon. Her Powers were reflected back upon her and she was cast to oblivion, never to be heard of again. The damage to Topkon was minimal, but Manda was trapped inside during the assault. The power was too much for Manda and her physical sight was lost forever.

When the God of Battle herd of the corruption that had come from the creation of Topkon, he cast his attention from the corridors, Zolton believed it was a direct result of the corruption that his very own daughter had brought upon his house of the gods. When Topkon lost the attention of the gods, it was hurled through the space between the prime material planes, to land on the world of Saldara. Upon Topkon's arrival to Saldara, a lone man emerged from the main entrance. This feeble, weak old Dana looked out upon his surroundings. He looked upon the swamplands that now surrounded his domain. With a tear in his eye Achilles turned, reentered Topkon and has never exited since...

It took Manda Zola five long years of searching, but finally she found Topkon and her uncle... Now Saldara is their home...

Gifted...after reading both parts of the prelude it is the first thought that came to mind. A talented writer awaiting the chance to put a completed manuscript across a pubishers desk--and we'll be lining up for our copies to be signed...

I love your writing style and the premise of the story. I hope your story finds itself on many a bookshelf in the future. :)
