Those of you who read my blogs know that I love food, wine and entertaining. I love to cook and so do most of my good friends. We share tried and true family recipes, trade cookbooks and books on food and wine, as well as give each other cooking tips, herb cuttings and restaurant reviews. We read cookbooks like we read novels and we peruse online food sites religiously for new ways to prepare old standard recipes.
If there is a new restaurant, bakery, deli or butcher's shop in the DC area - one of us knows about it or already been there! And, that includes wine shops, microbreweries and wineries. Let me tell you, we couldn't possibly get to every one of them in ten lifetimes! That's the beauty of living in a large metropolitan area, so much to choose from.
My son is a new foodie and that excites me. It's not that he's just discovered good food and good wine/beer, though. We've lived in several European countries and his palette is good :) What I mean is that he and my daughter have been exposed to international food and they have great taste buds and he is now ready to cook! I love a man in the kitchen!
My daughter already knows her way around a kitchen thanks to my grandmother and myself and of course, thanks to her love of food. She is a devotee of the Food network and Iron Chef and, she's a great, natural cook! I love that :)
Well, my son's college Parent Weekend is this coming weekend. M just called to tell me that he's researched online and found a great restaurant for us to try on Friday night :) It's an Asian restaurant that he has wanted to try and of course, my daughter and I are on-board! We can't wait to share food and break bread together. I believe that a family that cooks and eats together, stays together!
Thinking about food made me reach for three books my friend G loaned me this weekend and today, I finished one book I HIGHLY recommend to you.
If you want to read some funny, irreverent Southern humor by two saucy and spicy Southern women who offer fantastic recipes and anecdotes on hosting and/or participating in the perfect Southern funeral (and I don't mean as the corpse, of course!) find a copy of "Being Dead is no Excuse" by Gayden Metcalfe and Charlotte Hays. Their book is hilarious, seriously laugh out loud funny. You won't be disappointed! I am buying this book!
Their recipes look seriously good and yes, you MUST have Hellman's mayo, Lea & Perrin's Worcestershire sauce, pimento cheese, corn flakes and cream of mushroom soup in your pantry to whip up most of these Southern recipes. Apparently, no self-respecting Southern lady would be caught dead without these staples!
The next two books I plan on reading are:
The Devil's Larder by Jim Crace
The Art of Eating by M.F.K. Fisher
I will leave you with a quote from M.F.K. Fisher -
"There is a communion of more than bodies when bread is broken and wine is drunk."
I think that sums it up very nicely.
Peas and love!
