This morning, I decided on a quick trip to Petsmart with Ozzy, my two year old Pug. He loves riding in the car and when I opened the car door , he jumped right in, tail wagging non-stop. What a joy he is. He is full of youthful fun, energy and enthusiasm all rolled into one 24 pound ball. He reminds me of a toddler who has just discovered he can run and he runs with the wind in his hair without a care in the world.
I am nuts about Ozzy and I'm thankful I stopped at Petsmart two weeks ago just to pet the rescue dogs and cats (isn't that always how it goes?!) because that's where I met him. He immediately tugged at my heartstrings and in two hours, we were driving home. I've always fallen hard and fast for men :)
I've had four Cocker Spaniels in my adult life named Chelsea, Mischa, Sadie and Joe Cocker who were amazing dogs, each one with their special traits and characters. I grew up with a West Highland Terrier named Ricky, short for Richard the Lionhearted because he was a strong, brave boy. I loved them all and they lived long, happy lives. I love the cats in my life, too! Four in all in my history, all lovely, beautiful cats - Mia, Zach, Leo and Baby.
Ozzy is the best dog I've ever had. He wins hands down for many reasons. Maybe it's because I now have an empty nest and I'm in my 50's? Perhaps it's because I have more time to spend walking and playing with a dog? No, I always worked from home and had plenty of time and loved my past walking companions. I believe it is because I am alone at home and Ozzy is my doggie soul mate :) Strange, but true.
My friends, my kids and my sister say he is the perfect dog for ME at this time in my life. I would have to agree. We stay up late together, Ozzy sleeps in my room and doesn't stir until I get out of bed. And, he doesn't require early morning walks, thank the dear Lord! I am a slow person in the morning and he patiently waits for me to drink one cup of coffee before I find my sweats and running shoes! Not bad!
He sits or lays at my feet as I type or edit, snoring softly which I find very reassuring. He snores a bit louder at night, but again, I don't feel alone because he sounds like a man snoring beside me! LOL!
Ozzy has forced me to take walks again and enjoy the beautiful autumn days. He lies quietly while my friends visit and he's always up for a scratch on the head or a ball thrown if they feel like it. He seems to just go with the flow which I love about him. Quite Zen, really :)
Ozzy is a sweet, kind, patient soul who is good with my friend's and stranger's dogs and cats he's met recently. I am amazed at how good he is with kids, too. Ozzy just loves everyone and doesn't for a second believe that you won't love him back :) I would venture to say that even if you're not a dog lover, you'd love my Ozzy.
Yes, he snores, drools, slobbers, pees and poops in the aisles of Petsmart and sneezes in my face when he runs up with his toy chicken for me to throw for him again. Ozzy snorts in my face as I'm driving and puts one paw on my shoulder. He has also chewed the hell out of the heel of one of my favorite shoes and he insists that we not have ANY pillows on my bed or on my couch or chairs, but, all in all, he's a good boy and we are both fortunate to have found each other.
I am in love with a Pug :)
Peace and love.
