 Sending Letters to Heaven
Those of you who have read my blogs, would know back in March this year our 13 year old Black Persian cat named Gizmo died.  Miss 8 found him dead on Master 5's train table.  Gizmo was old, and the day before his death, we'd been at the vet with him.

The kids had slept at a friends the night before Gizmo died, as I'd gone out to see a band (Noiseworks).  When I'd woken that morning, Gizmo was alive and seemed okay.  He'd sat with me before I left to get the kids.   We arrived home twenty minutes later, and Miss 8 was keen to see him. That's when she found him dead.

She sat cuddling him, after I wrapped him in one of Miss 8's baby towels.  While I dug a hole outside my bedroom window to lay him to rest.  The following morning we held a funeral for him, Miss 8's idea.  She invited a few of her friends over.
It was really nice, all of them did a little speech and placed flowers on the newly covered grave.

If you want to read Miss 8's speech here is a link to the blog in question => FUNERAL

The reason I am reliving that is because tonight we are having an open fire.
Each time we have an open fire Miss 8 writes a letter to Gizmo, and puts it in the fire.

She believes that by doing this the letter gets to Gizmo in heaven.  She has also on occassions written a letter to her Great Grandmother that she knew, who is also in Heaven.

I was getting wood ready when the kids arrived back from their dads.
As soon as foty left, Miss 8 ran off.  I thought she must have been upset about something.
But when I found her, she was writing her letter to Gizmo.

She told Giz, that she missed him, and asked how Heaven was.  She also told Gizmo that we'd watched ET last night, and recalled a funny thing that Master 5 did.
It was the sweetest letter.

Just before I lit the fire Miss 8 placed the letter rolled up wedged into some of the wood.
As it started to burn she said "Hi Giz, I'll write again soon."

I had a little tear in my eye as she gave me a hug then stepped away from the burning flame.

I'm typing this enjoying the fire dancing on the wood.

Have a great Week-end

Easy .. out xx

Mezlie - she is a very sensitive soul. Her imagination is great too... although who am I say what she thinks on this matter isn't true?

ETS,
I don't know if you ever read part 2 of the life and death of Smog our veiled chameleon. We had to have a funeral at 10:00-11:00 pm for a lizard. It really needed to happen for my son to be at peace with loosing his pet.
I think Miss8 needed to have the funeral for her kitty. I don't think there is anything strange about it. Pets are there daily to greet us, cuddle with us and just bring a lot of joy. Kids confess things they can't tell anyone else to these 'family members'. They are good for people when your matched with the right pet. I really believe God gave us pets to lift our spirits. It's something to know a living thing will always be there, never judges you, is most always happy to see you and will cuddle with you though the good times and bad. They are truely a blessing!

Also sometimes when I can't get really bad feelings to go away and I really want to tell someone off but feel it may be uncalled for I write things out on paper and burn them. It seems to help in getting rid of the feelings.

Childlike faith seems to be the theme, for me, this morning here on thoughts. I just came from a post containing the love poem of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, "How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Count The Ways ...". There's a line in that poem which speaks to "childhood's faith". That line jumped out at me and I included the following in my comment ...

"the faith of a child, so pure and beautiful ... not jaded in any way shape or form ..."

Miss 8's beautiful heart and spirit have brought a tear to my eye on more than one occasion ... yet again this little girl has moved me to tears. Great post. Thanks so much for sharing and thank you for stopping by my blog. I have missed you ... your thoughtful comments brought love, care and smiles to my heart. Peace.

A lovely custom and a great way to help children cope with death.

That is so sweet, I lost my seven year old son almost 5 years ago. He was checking our mail with me watching and a truck struck him and killed him instantly. Every year on his birthday, we all gather and release balloons with notes we have written to Matthew, we all cry and in happiness and sadness that he is gone but in heaven having a happy day, with his family. I miss him so much, anything sweet helps an aching heart. Thanks for the sweetness of your innocent child.

Yor story is so beautiful, I lost my dad when I was eight and I have, on multiple occasions, written him letters and I know he is watching over me.
