Yesterday I had the honour of photographing a wedding.
"Big Deal," I hear you say, "show us the darn pictures" I imagine you thinking.
Well the reason I want to blog about it is because of the all manner of different ways weddings are played out now days. Traditional is optional, quiet is rare, laid back is how this one was.
The couple met online - Who'd have thought that possible! He'd been married before, she had previously been in a long defacto (no kids) relationship. They were a little jaded, and a little sceptical, but were open to possibilities.
They met online and had a coffee date, which extended to a lunch time date, which saw the two of them calling the office and not going back that day! That was their first date!!
They moved in together a month later, and nine months later they had a baby girl together. Almost three years later they tied the knot in a garden ceremony with family and friends. WOW!
Now the reason why all these impacted me because photographically it was a little subdued.
They only wanted a few photos, they didn't want many formal ones, and they had ZERO bridal party.
At first I must admit I was disappointed that our job - as photographers was almost less than 3 hours of work. There were no after ceremony official photographs, except for the ones we insisted on capturing for them, and a lot of our time was spent waiting for them to finish chatting with guests before we could say .. "could you just stand there and move this way".
So far the weddings I've done have had "most" of the formal, what I'd guess would be standard photographs taken, but yesterday was completely different. We did capture some GREAT moments in digital format (RAW!!! lol) and I know they will look back and be grateful to us for doing that. But the main message for me yesterday was that this couple knew what was important to them, they met untraditionally - well maybe nowadays it's more common to meet online. Their family replaced roles that often friends had the priviledge of filling, and their love shone through.
We worked around them, they didn't work around a photography schedule, they weren't restricted to an hour here and a deadline to return cars. Nope they made the day about love and family.
I must admit like I mentioned above, I was a little disappointed at first, but then I remembered the day was about them, not the photographs. They were a lovely couple and their almost 2 year old daughter certainly gave me moments to capture.
TonyRay you are right ... LOVE DOES WIN...
Hope you are all having a wonderful week-end
