Come to Australia, where our spiders eat
Come to Australia, where our spiders eat our snakes !
***************
An office receptionist got the shock of her life earlier this week when she found a 70cm long snake entangled in the web of a deadly spider. A lady came in to work and spotted the sight below next to a desk in her office. The snake, which had obviously died from the spider's poisonous bite, was off the ground and caught up in the web.

Leon Lotz of the arachnology department at the National Museum said it was only the second time that he had heard of a snake getting caught in a spider's web. It is believed the snake got caught in the web on Monday night. But it did not take the spider long to bite it. A red mark on the snake's stomach was evidence of where the spider had started eating it.

Throughout Tuesday, the spider checked on her prey, but on Wednesday she rolled it up and started spinning a web around it. She also kept lifting it higher off the ground, while continually snacking on it.

I'm not gonna lie...I thouhgt this was awesome! I know...I should be all squirmy, but I find animal behavior pretty intruiging....
Posted by  funfreak  on 2009-07-28 22:44:06

I'm with you FunF, it is awesome, gotta look at it like mother nature's creatures surviving (or not)!!

Hey Mr Bob, gotta love nature don't ya!? lol xx
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-29 04:51:14

Hm, disturbing.
Posted by  noahseth  on 2009-07-28 23:00:48

Hey Noah, I certainly wouldn't have kept the snake inside .. I probably would've taken photos though! Lol :)
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-29 04:52:01

Gee's ETS you'll frighten the visitors away, this was a carefully kept National secret until today. Don't tell anyone about the redbacks on the toilet seats, nobody will come here and you will be responsible for the collapse of our tourist trade. Are you having a hot spell in Melbourne, it's winter and all those snakes should be tucked up in bed. LOL
Posted by  sharnsgarden  on 2009-07-28 23:01:47

Hey Sharn, these aren't my pics! :) I'm not sure of the source, a friend sent it to me.. and of course I had to share it! It's too cold here for snakes too :)
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-29 04:52:39

I love this ... not only the spider and snake, which every Aussie learns to deal with as a kid. But the fact that the person who first found it, left it there and continued to watch and record the feast... AMAZING... Loved it!
Read Bill Bryson's downunder... I laughed 'til I cried. Sue
Posted by  Keep_Left  on 2009-07-28 23:09:52

Hey Sue, YES! You are right we do learn to deal with spiders and snakes as young tackers... I agree the person is amazing, and glad to have been sent it!..

Billy Bryson's downunder? Ok is that a book?

Book by a Yank who travels extensively ... his take on Aussie wildlife is priceless.

ahhh Ok excellent :)
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-29 07:19:59

That was pretty cool.. however, it makes me seriously think twice about coming to visit Australia!
Posted by  Country_girl  on 2009-07-28 23:10:28

Hey CG, honestly I've NEVER seen a snake in the wild, or in my backyard! lol.. I've only ever seen them in the zoos. As for spiders well I'd be lying if I said I'd never seen them around the house, yard etc.
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-29 04:54:23

Hi CG & Kel, We do get the occasional snake in the backyard, but they are very shy creatures unless protecting their nests. Dad's an old snake handler and we are all able to shoo them into a bag or something similar and release down the bush / river. I used a post tube last time I had a baby black snake in the office and let it go a couple of miles away. It wasn't happy with me at all but you sort of expect that. lol
Posted by  Keep_Left  on 2009-07-29 06:25:35

Awww I'm so jealous!! I'd love to have that skill...
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-29 07:20:54

I THINK THIS IS ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING AND DISTURBING!!!!!!!!!!!

But you know I still love you...... although you are weird and warped!!!! xo :)
Posted by  Kaybee  on 2009-07-28 23:12:51

Hey Kaybs with your suggestion I've added the song! Lol
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-29 04:55:36

I'm with ADH. Oz: Land of Tim Tams, good friends, and carnivorous spiders. Just point me to the immigration office. Only thing, though, do I have to declare my guns on the customs form? Maybe I'm too wild at heart even for Australia...
Posted by  davidsbass  on 2009-07-29 00:23:39

Hey David, NO GUNS!! lol... we have enough venomous and lethal items around (snakes, spiders etc) without guns! lol
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-29 04:56:52

I am both disgusted and fascinated. I love the animal behaviours and the capture and prey but the pics just were gross.
Posted by  Moxi  on 2009-07-29 00:24:14

Hey Moxi, I hear you, and I understand! But hey it's nature and you can't fault the way "things" survive.
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-29 04:57:26

jeez- if thats your spiders- what the heck are you Beetles like? I don't think I wannna know...
Posted by  pastormike  on 2009-07-29 01:07:43

Mike, the beetles are small and cute, that's why the spiders go for meals in snakes, not snacks in insects! lol
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-29 04:58:07

*shrug*

I told you.
Posted by  Long  on 2009-07-29 01:09:51

Hey Long, I KNOW!!!! I thought of you when I got the email with this in it!!! lol
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-29 04:58:32

nevertheless...the spider definately had a lavish meal...
Posted by  isuckedthemoon  on 2009-07-29 01:30:59

Hey moonie, YES!! You are very correct, the spider will probably feed on this snake for months! :)
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-29 05:00:21

They say the heat and the flies here can drive a man insane. But you don't have to believe that, and nor does that bright mauve elephant that just cycled past.

-- (Terry Pratchett, The Last Continent)

Best anecdotal book ever written about Australia.

LOl... love it Long! :)

I have no fear of spiders but snakes make me scream. Oh and bats too. Having said that, I found this amazing also. Nature is cruel but fascinating and the thought of a tiny spider having that much power against something so huge makes me think about women - lol. E x
Posted by  overthehillandfar...  on 2009-07-29 03:34:44

Hey Auntie E, I don't like snakes either, but hey if I keep enough spiders around the yard, I wont have to worry about Snakes! lol

Yes you are right... I see the parallels. xxx
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-29 05:02:55

I would be terrified out of my mind. I'm petrified of insects and arachnids but strangely okay with snakes. This further proves that my fear is nowhere near irrational.
Posted by  anonymityfactorX  on 2009-07-29 03:58:37

Anon, it's not that bad, honestly, this is rare, well rare that we get to see it I guess, and only in the bush - outback or farms do you get snakes. The spiders are another matter, but a shoe can easily fix them up!
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-29 04:59:38

Kel you are supossed to be killing the spiders before I arrive. I really would like to see pictures of dead spiders in the future :)
Posted by  bigd49  on 2009-07-29 05:11:32

Okay D, that's the orders for me .. ever dead one I see I will photograph just for you, so you know when you come visit me you'll be safe and spider free! xx
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-29 07:22:28

Love your new pic Kel!

Wow, this was pretty cool.

thanks Tony, worth a look hey :)

Dang! I've seen some amazing snake/spider/scorpion/centipede rodeos, but this beats all! I'd be worried I would be next with this ambitious spider.
Posted by  circe  on 2009-07-29 11:39:03

circe, it's pretty amazing isn't it .. mind you I did not take the photos! I'll try to find out where they were taken :)
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-30 20:38:41

Terrifying! That is the stuff of my nightmares. I thought I was getting over my arachnaphobia - guess not.
Posted by  SecretChroniclesO...  on 2009-07-29 12:25:29

SecretChronicles, I'm so sorry, but just remember they are only photos ;)
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-30 20:43:07

Don't be sorry. The photo's are interesting indeed. I am just terrified of spiders, and ones that are large enough to take on a snake - I shudder at the thought.
Posted by  SecretChroniclesO...  on 2009-07-31 11:04:04

OMFG haha Im scared on two effects ;O..YIKES!, and i thought slugs in my graden mating earlier was amusing :S..Haha :P.

I knew there was a reason I always wanted to visit there. That's pretty cool! I've never seen that before :D
Posted by  Heatherlyn  on 2009-07-29 18:20:28

Heatherlyn, well there are so many more fascinating sites in Australia than the wild life but I'll admit the wildlife is pretty awesome :)
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-30 20:44:51

I wpuld have freaken freaked out. here I am licensed for pesticides and I am petrified of snakes and spiders. In fact I had to be excused from spider and snake classes. You don't want to be around me when I see one. I am a screaming idiot. Then I can't sleep unless I have one eye open. Sorry but I had to scroll fast through the pics.
Posted by  kal  on 2009-07-29 18:26:29

Kal, wow you are that scared of them? Well from now on I'll post snake and spider warnings for you at the start, don't want to scare off my friends :)
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-30 20:45:46

Those photos are so morbidly fascinating. You want to look away but can't. So very cool! :o) -- Stormy.
Posted by  Williwaw  on 2009-07-29 19:05:06

Hey Stormy, they are amazing photos .. Although I didn't take them I would've loved to have though, just not in MY OFFICE! lol
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-30 20:47:01

You're right, Easy, this IS absolutely fascinating. Of course, that's easy for me to say...from the other side of the planet! :)
Posted by  BootLady  on 2009-07-29 22:17:57

Hey Boots, I'm not sure where this was taken in the country, but you certainly wouldn't see it in the office I work in which is very much city living :)
Posted by  EasyToSay  on 2009-07-30 20:35:12

Ok, that seals it! I always wanted to visit Australia, until the Discovery Channel started airing shows about all the venomous and deadly little ( and not so little)squirmies you've got there! Now I see this pic, and what REALLY freaks me out, was this was taken in an OFFICE!! I would totally crap a cow if I ever saw that next to a desk I was working at!! OMG!!!
Posted by  gigglegirl  on 2009-07-30 00:51:18

Lol Gigglegirl, honestly Australia is pretty much like your California... and the spiders and snakes well hardly ever see them. Come visit I'll look after you! x xx
