‘You look beautiful.’ he said, his lips twisting into a smile, revealing pearl white teeth. She blushed slightly, combing down her hair with her fingers in front of the mirror. She looked down at her feet as she wore silver earrings, biting her lower lip. She inhaled deeply and looked up. The corner of her eyes had light wrinkles, gently brushed across her pale skin. Her blue eyes were a mixture of watercolor, an artist’s loving work, within the streaks of shinning blue, her eyes revealed sadness. To her dismay, people notice it very often.
‘Peter, what if he’s not the one?’ she asked softly. He smiled again. ‘He’ll be. Once he sees you, he’ll never take his eyes off you.’ She chuckled softly. She turned towards him, a slight smile on her face. She knelt down and placed her hands onto his lap, where he sat on her bed. ‘You have to go.’ she said softly. He nodded, his eyes looking hesitant. ‘After this, you won’t need me anymore.’
She leaned towards him and kissed lightly on his lips. ‘I’ll need you everyday of my life. I need you in my heart.’ she whispered, her breath lingering a second too long on his skin. She pulled herself back. ‘But I can’t have you…here.’ she waved at the air. ‘It’s not natural.’ He nodded again, hints of sorrow unmasking his disappointment. ‘I’m not really here, you know. Baby, you’re making me here. You need to let go.’
She looked somehow paler as he said it. ‘No. I want you to go. I want you to go.’ she said, her heart fluttering. It was so confusing. She wanted the sight of him gone from her life a she moved on, but she wanted him to be in her heart too. She doesn’t want to forget him, but she wants him to go. He shook his head and stood up and took her hands into his. ‘Baby, I’m here with you everyday, I live in you. I will always love you and be with you…just not like this.’
He hugged her tightly, her scent of perfume ever so sweet. He felt tears coming. ‘Now you listen to me,’ he croaked, his voice cracking the exterior of his pretended bravery. ‘You are going to move on from now; you are going to marry this man and be his wife and have his children. I am always going to remember you as my wife. I want you to move on from here. You need to stop clinging on the old and start anew.’ She felt tears flowing down. They stood in the embrace for a few moments, unable to let go.
‘Ok.’ she said softly. She looked at the clock and got her handbag. She sniffled and straightened her posture. Out she went. She walked onto the streets and looked back once. He was there, smiling slightly. A smile mixed with sorrow. She turned back around and walked to the restaurant. Outside, a man smiled and took her hand. She felt a sudden shock.
‘Hello. You must be Sarah. I’m Peter, your date.’ he looked at her and smiled. ‘You look gorgeous. I’ll be the happiest man alive to walk into the restaurant with you. How lucky am I.’
