She stood slightly swaying within the rhythm of the gentle wind. Overlooking the trickling river, dawn broke out into a surreal watercolor display. Streaks of hot blood red painted the sky, shaded with the soft and tenderness of orange. The large oak tree behind her rustled its leaves as the wind blew again. She balanced herself from one foot to the other, her eyes puffy and pink.
Her red scarf flew over her shoulders, its ends flying with the wind. She wrapped it closer to her neck, feeling the warmth of it against her cold skin. She looked beyond the horizon, thinking hard. Losing a child was so painful. It felt like ripping away part of your soul, the wounds and tears never to heal, because it lacked a missing part. She cupped her hands together and breathed air into them, making them feel warmer against the cold.
‘Mommy, why are you sad?’
‘Mommy, are you ok?’
‘Mommy, I love you.’
A sudden burst of newly founded memories threw open the doors of her mind. How did she ever forget those little precious words? It slipped into their daily lives so much; they just blend with the atmosphere. Now, it seemed like she was hanging onto every thread of their conversation, mother and child. Tears poured down her face as she relived the precious time they had together.
‘Mommy, I made this for you.’
‘Mommy, I’m scared.’
‘Mommy, what is this?’
All those memories, buried deep inside her head, seemed to be a precious treasure that she would guard fiercely all her life. Tears still streamed down her face as she recalled the times. Her little child was so innocent, so beautiful, he made the world. He painted the world around their little family, with so vibrant and beautiful colors, even if the times were bleak. Everything was perfect to him, despite his knowing that he would soon go. He was the brightest child in the world, no misery, no sadness; no depression could hang onto him for long.
All those pleasant memories seeped into her veins. Emotionally distraught, she felt so grateful for possessing the memories, but so angry and frustrated that it ended there, full stop. Suddenly, someone from behind wrapped his arms around her and kissed her cheek. She turned around and saw her husband there, resisting the tears. They hugged for as long as they could remember, reliving the memories together…
