 The Budding Artist

The first time sophomore Tomwas published, he was in fifth grade.
“My father is a doctor. He got me interested in medical illustrating- he has this great collection of medical textbooks and I practiced drawing using those,” said Tom.
In 2006, Tom’s father helped him get publish illustrations in Orthopedics, and The American Journal of Orthopedics.
“Everything has a certain proportion to it. And that’s really what makes anatomy much easier than an abstract drawing,” said Tom of the illustrations.
“It was really just for exposure. I wouldn’t feel right charging people for the things that I draw. Especially since I was really young,” said Tom.
Besides these drawings, Tom has created illustrations for an exercise band which will appear on the product, produced a 50 page color comic book and published work for a Chiropractics firm.
Though these projects, Tom has gained communication skills. “When publishing work, I realized that you are no longer drawing or creating something for yourself, or for your personal satisfaction. There are standards that you have to meet for somebody else.”
Tom said that he has also learned to balance the amount of time and effort that goes into the conception and fruition of his art.
“With drawing I think that the best virtue you can have is patience. I know that people say that some art is transient and it happens immediately, and once you get inspiration, you can’t stop it; you have to make it happen immediately. But much of what I do is very patience and time consuming,” said Tom.
As he has gotten older, Tom has kept alive his dream of being an artist, while applying a more practical edge. “I've been leaning towards clinical psychiatry and researching Art Therapy as well, which seems like a great way to combine these two interests,” said Tom.
Throughout, Tom has consistently declined payment. “If I’m never paid for my art or what I draw, I’m totally cool with it,” said Tom.
Part of Tom’s success is driven by his attitude. “My mom says it best. She says that no matter what you do, make sure that you do the best that you can do in that. I think it’s a great philosophy,” said Tom.

This was an article for my school paper. Here is a link to this dude's website. He is phenomenal.

I have to speak out where I can about such sites....why do we encourage "deviants"? Oh, it's so hip and trendy to be a monster or a deviant....why??? Why can't we be heralded creatures of light? Instead of shadows in the dark?

Second, how lucky you all are who grow up with a computer silver spoon in your mouths. To have access as a child to the internet and be a member of sites like this and display/web pages....such advantage to interact and spread fame like wild fire. You can't imagine what life was like before 1994. Sigh.

I think that in the case of deviant art, the name "deviant" is meant to have a positive implication, as in deviant from what the crowd is doing, rather than deviant in a devilish sense.

I am lucky to grow up with the computer "spoon." I have never known life without this sort of technology.
