 My dinner last week...
So the dinner at my house went well. We did a Thanksgiving in April... I have a friend with a turkey farm and he always has a fresh turkey or two on hand so I gave him a call when I found out I was hosting dinner. I was lucky... he said a local church ordered 12, but when they came to pick them up they only wanted 10. So he was scared it was going to be wasted... Oh for those of you out there that has never had a fresh, farm raised turkey... spend the extra money and do it once... it is well worth it. So much better than the store bought turkeys.

Anyway so I am in love... boy she gets hot in an instant... always ready to be turned on... sensitive to my touch... and can cook a 16lb turkey in 2 hours and 50 min. May this built in convection oven I have it awesome lol I got this as a field test unit from my factory, and I love it...

now here I am armed with a fresh turkey... and I get a call from my mom... "What do you need us to bring? And what are you making? Your great aunt Kay is kind of fussy." Oh great... that is just peachy... I told her I was going to make a turkey because of the amount of people we are going to have over. She said that was fine and wanted to know what to bring... I told her I have no idea, I listed off the stuff I was going to make and she laughed... "So we are having Thanksgiving in April huh." I said, "Yup... and besides I get tired of the women in our family saying that the men in our family are slack and can never get stuff together untill that last min. Sooo I will make a big dinner, knock all your socks off... and forever be excluded from all the man bashing around the knitting circle." She just kind of chuckled... "No matter how good this dinner is... you still a man... and you still going to get bashed around the knitting circle, so give that idea up." So I was like, "Oh... in that case we are having frozen pizza... bring a 2 liter or something.... (Long pause) Just kidding" then I got yelled at lol... "That was not funny Douglas... I already told your grandmother we were having turkey." I could not do anything but laugh.... "ok ok just relax... I told you what I am making, you ladies put your heads together and see if you want to add to it... and if you do, then that is what you need to bring.... except I did forget the grape juice an ginger ale so I can make punch... so pick that up."

Now... the draw back to cooking a turkey so fast is it leaves you with less time to do everything else. So I get everything ready and they show up... with like bags and bags of grocies... I am like what is all this... "Well Aunt Kay wants to make a cake, and your grandma wants to make stuffing from scratch, and I decided I was going to make fresh mashed potatoes because well the stuff from the box is just nasty so you can just throw them away." Wow... I had to stop her right there... it's my house and I was taking control...

"Mom... just relax... put the bags down and don't touch anything." turning my attention to my grandmother and giving her a hug and a kiss on the cheek “How was your trip? I bet you’re tired." We chit chatted for just a few moments, then I turned to my great aunt Kay I hugged her and kind of went through the same stuff lol... then time to organize lol

"OK... Mom the potatoes I have are fine... they are the garlic ones I know you like because whenever I make them you ask me if they are home made and I say no... Grandma? Did you really want to make stuffing with all the rest of the food we have? Or was that mom's idea?"
She just laughed... "Yeah that was your mom's idea I told her you probably have enough food here and I really would just like to relax... but she insisted that she had to have my stuffing." I turn... "Mom? She drove 16 hours yesterday to get here and is a guest... we will find a time this weekend to get her to make stuffing." Turning again... "Aunt Kay... is this going to be our famous Lemon cake??" She just smiled..." I bet that was mom’s idea too?" She said yeah but she did not mind. "Well I will tell you what, if you don't mind I would love to help with that and you can teach me how to make it as well... and while we are easting it can be cooking and we can let it cool before we ice it." She said that sounded perfect and gave me a big hug....

I showed the ladies around, as my mom bragged on this and that I shrugged most of it off and just told them it was luck... we had about 6 kids in the back yard playing and they went outside as I finished things up in the kitchen.

Now look I know it may have seemed like I was harsh to my mom... but you have to know her... she bullies everyone. And you have to just put her in check from time to time or she will over run you. I try my best to do it in a nice way.

We all sit down for dinner and thing are going great, then my mom brings up my accident and we get stuck on that for ever... I hear about every home remedy ever thought of, and I would not doubt if I got a few new ones... I had to explain to my Great Aunt what it was not attempted murder lol and why the lady was not in jail... she just did not understand. But we got passes all that and for the most part it was a good time.

After everyone left I cleaned up... made a bloody Mary... and went to sleep hahaha....

and I am still eating turkey...

Smile.... and take time out with family.... you never know when it will be the last time you talk with them.

Doug, really really good write, had me hooked - what a great day. Mrs G just made our Sunday roast (chicken), and we scoffed it down with the trimmings otherwise I would be so hungry right now. Glad it went well, and keep an eye on your oven; there are men out there that would steal 'her' away if they could - regards Puck

Your family dinner sounded scrumptious. Growing up my grandparents raised chickens. The chicken served for Sunday dinner strutted around the barn yard that very morning. I agree, Douglas, fresh trumps frozen any day. Enjoy your Sunday. Peace.

That sounded wonderful. Glad you had a good time. Another remedy my mom use to do about head injuries is... Nah only kidding. I haven't had a farm fresh turkey, I will need to try one in the future. Need to see if there are any in CO. I enjoy deep frying my turkey. for 2 reasons. I enjoy the taste and since I have to stay outside with it I can drink a beer or two while everyone else does the rest. Only kidding I help a bit, but mainly stay with the turkey.
