2012+1
I was wet and cold but I guess so was everyone else. We were all standing there in a field looking up at the sky and waiting for a sign. But exactly what the sign was we did not know, I guess maybe before I tell you about why we are here I will tell you about how it is we came to be here.
I am from a small settlement one of only 20 that made it through the Great War, a war that made all others look like small arguments between friends. The Middle East was bustling with activity and North and South Korea had continued to show more and more instability. It was found that pirates off the coast had intercepted a black market shipment of nuclear rockets and the whole world was on edge because it had no idea where they were headed or in whose hands they would end up. Some countries sat on the fence crossed their fingers and prayed, while the others prepared for the worst. The US had brought all their troops home, and had all but closed its borders. Canada joined ranks with them to secure the North American continent, but because Mexico had become a new hot spot for terrorists they cut off the southern third. While US War ships guarded oil platforms and drilling rigs and basically the whole world had become one unstable bomb just waiting for someone the sneeze and blow it all up…
Then it happened… A man working to long shifts on an oil rig fell asleep on the job, the accident that occurred as a result ended in an explosion… the world never recovered from that one accident. The US thought it was being attacked by terrorists so they shot off a few missiles to prove a point. They went right into the heart of a terrorist hotbed in Mexico. What they failed to realize was that there was a hush hush conference going on at that moment with several top Middle Eastern officials to bring and end to the terrorist movement and try to bring peace. With the death of these officials it was all the proof the other terrorist cells needed to start a detailed strike all over the world. London, Paris, Berlin, and New York one after another rocked with explosions each in turn counterstriking who they thought were to blame. Sometimes they got it right sometimes they did not. Other countries seeing this as a chance to gain ground and take the upper hand attacking US interests and blowing up their war ships, it all happened so fast. Before long bombers were unloading payloads and wiping out entire cities and it seemed as if no one was left. The world just came to a halt.
Months after the dust settled many of those who were alive started to find places with the least amount of damage. The fallout and the sickness killed almost all that were left, but those that made it seemed to build up a resistance and seemed to be getting stronger. Many people saw it as another form of evolution… just the next step in our cycle. But others believed that god had not abandoned up and this was the tribulation period, and there were some that just think we were the lucky ones… or unlucky ones depending on your views. But with Ham radios and what ever else we could salvage we became a network of about 20 settlements all as if they were 20 little countries, with different beliefs and ways of doing things but at this point we all agreed that we needed to find a way to prevent this from happening again. On our sector we had a profit of sorts, his name was Jeremiah he was a good man and had found an old library with a lot of old history books and theology books. He spent most of his time reading and thought his time best spent finding ways to learn from our mistakes and ways to keep peace. But then he became obsessed. There was a calendar that predicted the fall of the world in the year 2012, the end of a cycle. The more he read the more he preached, he had people listing to his words through the ham radio and many people came from other sectors and became his followers it was getting to be rather cult like.
But I guess that brings me to this point and time… here we are December 31st 2011 with one more hour to go all in a field looking at the heavens for a sign that the end is near… some of us do not believe it. Others are making love for the last time or eating all their stores of their finest foods. Some are just in tears. Now we have only minuets left… as the time tics one and midnight strikes… every stands there with baited breath waiting for something… and then… nothing. Just as calm a night as you could ask for its 2012 and we are all still alive. One girl walks over to me and says, “so what are you thankful for tonight?” “I guess just the fact that I made it to 2012 and then tomorrow I will be able to say I made it to 2012 + 1….”
