 Jesus and Oprah
So have you received like a million e-mail forwards about Oprah and her "new age" religious values?  It seems that my Christian brothers and sisters are having a hard time digesting the power Oprah has, and the idea that this power comes from herself.  I have always believed that no matter who we are there are points in our lives that are so huge (whether points of joy or complete sorrow) that leave us with the recognition that there is something much larger than just our "selves".  There is always a limit to self - to "my" power, strength, success, skill...etc.  Over and over I've seen people encounter this realization as they face death, huge life-changing decisions or moments, the birth of a child, or something of the like.

Oprah is a huge celebrity with a lot of influence.  I guess I've always kind of admired her for the good she does, though I imagine with her resources there is a lot more good she could do (but couldn't we all?!)  She is a woman with a persuasive presence and an understanding of humanity that comes from her experience.  I don't always agree with her, but I can't say that I think she is perpetuating some sort of non/un Christian beliefs.  If, after having watched or read something she suggests we are challenged to be better people, then she is doing the world some good.

Yes, I wish I knew that Oprah, among others, loved Jesus Christ and understood the freedom and salvation that comes from having a living relationshipw with Him.  Yes, I wish she was as in awe of God's power and goodness as I am.  Yes, I wish she'd stand up on her show and give God the glory for her success and influence.  But no I'm not willing to discredit who she is and what she does because she has not yet found the true source.  I think she is searching, as we all are, for purpose, peace, and understanding.

Sometimes Christians respond defensively before responding lovingly or understandingly.  Sometimes Christians push their own agenda so far that they exclude people who are searching for Truth.  When will we learn that in order to spread joy we must start by simply loving and listening?

I want to be a Christian who lives what she says she believes.  I want to be a Christian who sees the breath of life (the Holy Spirit) in each person I meet.  I want to do good and change the world.  I'm not sure how to do it, but if I follow God's lead I'll be headed in the right direction.

Today I met Jesus.  He looked like an average guy.  He does good things for other people.  He's always asking how he can help, and he does whatever he's asked.  He's encouraging, he's loving, and he's searching.  He hasn't always done things right, but he's learned alot about who God is and how much he's loved.  This guy knows that the power within comes from the power above.  He's no celebrity, but he's Christ alive.

I imagine I learned more from him today than I'll ever learn from Oprah.

Have you met Jesus today?  I hope so, and I hope you're life is a little better for having seen him/her!

I met Jesus, today, in this blog post. HE spoke loud and clear. HE uses all of us in a way to reach out to the lost and hurting. Thank you LORD.
