One of the most fun parts of my job is to volunteer at the high school on Wednesdays during lunchtime. I get there around 11 and stay until 2 or so. It's a great way to just hang out with the youth on their own terms - and in their territory. Yesterday was once of those opportunities for me. I love to see the kids at school and it's always so wonderful that they actually get excited about coming and hanging out for a few mintues. I get to hear the stories of the day - the trials and tribulations of high school and all that good stuff.
Yesterday I met Jesus at the high school - she was a sophomore with Cerebral Palsy. She always wears pink - and it's clear that pink is her absolute FAVORITE color. She has some good friends who sometimes sit in front of her wheelchair facing her with their legs braced on her chair. Then she hits the gas and takes them for a ride around the gym floor. It's hilarious and she laughs her head off every time.
Yesterday I met Jesus in this lovely gal as she just sat with me and we communicated without words. She knows what people say to her and she has a response but is unable to speak it - so we had to come up with some creative ways to chat. I found out she has 10 brothers and sisters - all who have special needs. She's going to graduate in 2010 and she's going to wear pink to roll across the stage. She likes school and she has a boyfriend!
I left the school yesterday with a new understanding of how Christ communicates to us - sometimes words just get in the way. This young lady is full of Jesus - her smile, her eyes, her excitement, and her joy. And she's not afraid to share it, though I'm sure she gets made fun of sometimes.
