| Absence Excuses and Apology Notes

My baby was sick yesterday. He spent most of the night tossing and turning, burning up with a fever and vomiting in the bathroom. Needless to say, I didn’t get much sleep either, as I fished for the digital thermometer and his Children’s Tylenol, and sat with him on the side of the tub until he was sure he was done throwing up. I kept him home from school and we camped on the couch, watching Spongebob reruns and Christmas movies while nibbling saltine crackers and sipping on hot chicken soup. The grey rainy weather outside matched our weary moods inside. We cuddled up for a cozy afternoon nap, which helped a great deal. Michael woke up fever free and feeling like his usual, crazy little self again--hooray! I was worried he’d miss his first school Christmas program scheduled for tonight. He’s going to be a penguin and I promised his sister pictures.
While writing out an absentee excuse for his teacher this morning, I had to write her another apology note as well. My miniature entrepreneur opted to sell a Christmas cookie from his lunchbox on Monday to a classmate for a dollar. I gasped in distress to think that this other poor little boy spent his lunch money on a single cookie-more proof to me that kindergartners should not be sent to school with cash for lunch or anything else! It’s Book Fair Week and, for days, Michael has hounded and begged me to give him money so he could buy a book. Not happenin’, Little Dude. For sure, he’d give his cash to a friend for a broken Hot Wheels or Matchbox car, most likely missing a wheel or a windshield, probably covered with mud, and not give a second thought to that book he promised to buy! Fortunately we can look over the books together tonight before the Christmas program, so he can pick something out then and I’ll know his money will be well spent.
Meanwhile, there’s still this matter of the ill-spent dollar. I had sent the money back to school on Tuesday in an envelope addressed to the teacher with a note explaining the situation, and requesting that the dollar be returned to the other student. Unfortunately the teacher stayed home with her little boy, who was sick that day, and not knowing what else to do with this envelope, Michael gave it to his girlfriend instead! Why not! So, I’ve written another note, hoping that the teacher is back at school today, and possibly that Cheyenne still has the dollar that belongs to Joshua, and that all of this can eventually be straightened out and set right once more….
