| FATHER JACOB {Chapter SIX} |
Levi and Jeremy sat in Jeremy’s basement. Neither had spoken for the past ten minutes or so. Lighting another cig, Jeremy asked.
“What the hell we gonna do Keyman?”
“I don’t know Flav Dog.” Levi answered. We gotta find out what happened to Jimmy and Brandon first.”
“Yeah but how?” Jeremy asked. “We can’t just call the cops and ask them. And we sure as hell can’t go over there until the cops all leave.”
“I don’t kn,,,,” Levi started to say, when he caught a glimpse of the TV. “Holy shit Flav! Turn that up.”
As Jeremy reached for the remote, he saw the picture. It was a helicopter view of Brandon’s house.
'Police here in Forrest Heights are trying to piece together the strange occurrences that have happened in the past two days. Right now, you are seeing live coverage from our Sky Copter, of the home of Richard and Emily Walston. The couple were found dead earlier today in their home. Police are currently trying to find the whereabouts of their fourteen year old son, Brandon, who was last seen leaving soccer practice after school yesterday. Richard Walston, you will remember, rose to prominence a little over two years ago, when he successfully defended Trent Miller and Stanley Gilbertson, the two main defendants in the Sybrotech robbery in central Wisconsin. That robbery, you will recall, left two scientists dead, along with over fifty items of top secret computer parts stolen. Richard was shot once in the head in their family room, while Mrs. Walston was shot in the back by the stairs on their back deck. Police are not giving any more details, but we have learned that this is very similar to a scene just yesterday in Elkton. A small town in the northeast of Maryland, where a young couple was shot in their sleep and their sixteen year old son is still missing. Channel seven has been informed that that couple were Eric and Jill Dirckson. We have also just been informed that Mr. Dickson was a Scientist for Sybrotech until just prior to the robbery. He was never considered a suspect in that robbery, but one has to wonder, if there is any connection to this bizarre double, double murder, and the biggest high tech robbery in history. Stay tuned to channel seven for further updates. Or tune to MSNBC for live up to the minute coverage.'
“Oh fuck Flav Dog.” Levi said, on the verge of tears. As he looked at Jeremy, Jeremy was shaking and crying.
“Levi?” Jeremy cried. “Levi, what we gonna do?”
Father Jacob entered his house and saw Tobias sitting on the couch. He knew right away something was wrong.
“Father Jacob!” Tobias cried out as he ran to the Father. “Oh Father, it’s horrible.” He cried as he fell into the Fathers arms.
“Tobias? What’s wrong my son? I’m not that late am I?”
“No. No. It’s on the news.” Tobias said still crying.
“What Tobias? What’s on the news?” Father asked as he walked Tobias over to the couch and sat down.
“It’s Brandon, Jimmies friend. You don’t know him. He doesn’t go to our school or church.”
Father Jacob held Tobias closer. “It’s okay Tobias, just let me here this.”
As Father Jacob watched the live report on CNN, Tobias was holding him tightly and openly weeping. Father tried to be consoling to Tobias, but all hell was running through his mind.
“Father, they say Brandon’s missing, and his parents were killed. So is another boy from Elkton.”
Tobias looked up at Father and through his tears asked.
“Did you ever get a hold of Jimmy?”
Father Jacob didn’t know how to answer Tobias. He knew Jimmy was safe, but how could he tell Tobias that? How would he react? Shane was right; this had gotten all fucked up.
“Tobias, I have to go.” Father said
“No! No! No Father!” Tobias cried out as he hugged Father tighter.
Father Jacob had a decision to make. Push Tobias away and leave. Leave him here alone to deal with this, or stay and hope he got back to Jimmy before he came to. There was a third option, but Father Jacob wasn’t totally sure he should do it. Against his better judgment, Father chose option three.
“Tobias?” Father said as he unlocked the boys grip on him. “We need to have a very serious and private talk.”
