| Just an Ordinary Guy |
|
My revision of another devotion I read on the internet, and again I can't remember where it came from.
First, read 1 Samuel 16:7 and Judges 6:11-18
God consistently uses plain old, ordinary people to do extraordinary things. We tend to cower in a corner, waiting for God to drop some superstar on the scene. But God is developing someone in obscurity whom we haven’t heard of. We look around and say, “What if [fill in the blank] became a Christian? Wouldn’t that be wonderful?” But while we’re wondering if so-and-so will ever come around, God is grooming someone completely unknown to us.
Remember the time when a giant Philistine was taunting the armies of Israel? Duh, I don’t mean “Do you remember being there?” OK, so, everyone was paralyzed with fear. They were begging God for a hero, for a miracle. So what did God do? He chose a shepherd boy who had only been sent by his father to take food to his older brothers on the front lines. David went out to face the giant with only a few stones and a sling, but, most importantly, with faith in God.
So do you remember another time when Israel again was immobilized by fear because of their enemies? THis time God went after this guy who was minding his own business, threshing wheat. His name was Gideon (my grandmother’s Bible spelled it Gedeon!), and he was convinced that God had called the wrong guy. But God selected him precisely because Gideon didn’t trust his own ability. Gideon had no choice but to trust in God.
If you have faith in God, if you believe that God can use you, if you are willing to take a step of faith here and there, then God can do incredible things through you. God is not looking for ability but availability. He can give you ability any time. But God is looking for someone who will say, “I would like to make a difference where I am. Lord, I am available.”
Just watch what God can do with an attitude like that!
