| Iconic, Not Erudite |
President Obama is in his element. Campaigning and organizing communities for President…wait, wasn’t the election last year? He won right? After all, his face is plastered over every magazine imaginable, Cosmo, Seventeen, Harpo, and Christmas Meals under 30 minutes.
Since he did win a year ago, and has been the man for the last ten months, shouldn’t he be doing something a little more substantial than heading on the road and putting his label out there for the Democrats? It’s kind of like having a surprise band, let’s say U2, open up for a local band named Tennessee Tree Killers. Yeah, at first you’re amped and ready, but the only thing left is a long, long show of mediocrity, and quite possibly a let down.
The POTUS is an Iconic leader. He picks and chooses his “appearances” strategically. By nature he is still a community organizer. He relishes the fact that he can bring people together. Whether his message comes across in a comprehensible manner is still debatable. But, in the end he excels in uniting a democratic base, at least perking the ears of independents, and always has the Republican spotlight waiting to expose any mistakes. So he does have our attention, and well the attention of the world. Really, who gets a Peace Prize for wearing a White Sox jacket to a Nationals opening day “first pitch”. That damn near started a baseball civil war.
Though this may seem to be a favorable trait, it is just that…a trait. He is an Iconic leader, not an erudite leader. We have not had a steadfast decision on the Afghanistan War. Regardless of what the plan is, the POTUS should be deliberate on his approach to a questioning War Staff. Our bloodiest month in years finally closed its bitter chapter, and it seems that Obama feels guilty in his wishy-washy attempts at War strategy and used his Icon status to try and bring resolution to our fallen heroes in Delaware in the middle of the night. Make no mistake, I do feel he does wish to honor their sacrifice, and again it is a move of compassion, however, it is a move that I fear will come to haunt him.
If he now enforces greater attention to the War efforts, it will be looked upon, and with right reason, that he is calling his mistake on the procrastination and lack of knowledge and confidence in being a War time President. Well, after campaign season is over, anyway. If he continues to ignore the problem, you know putting off taking out the garbage until it over flows and you just bag it again, then his “salute to the fallen” will look to be a band-aid on a compound fracture, all show, and no point.
Let’s face it, as much as many Americans believed in Hope and Change a year ago, it has been proven that President Obama is not a complete president. He does not have the resolve to make decisions on tough questions. A nation looks to him for substance not rhetoric. Words only go so far, actions change the world. The only action President Obama has been doing lately is tallying up taxpayer money to campaign for Democrats on the campaign trail. Yep, all talk.
