| I too have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas

It dawned on me last night, while sitting on the couch, drinking egg nogg and gazing at my beautifully lite tree. All the lights in the house were turned off, except the Christmas lights of course and I was listening to Slient night ( by enya, sung in Irish Gaelic). I was sitting curled up on the couch in front of the tree and I was realizing I had too been sucked into the glitz holiday season that every year manages to make more people stressed, depressed and overwhelmed. We get caught up in buying gifts, recieving the brand new gifts that we've wanted "all year", or atleast lieing and say we did. Doesn't anyone remember? Remember what this Holiday is about? It's is about celebrating Christ, coming to this earth for eveyone of us. Whether you are black, asian or white, Islamic, Buddist, pagan or Christians. It isn't about buying or recieving the best gifts, or who can out decorate one and other to win "the best lite house on the block!" award. It's about doing things for others, and celebrating Christ with a happy heart, not to get merit points. It's truely unfortunate that we've come to that. We're not rejoicing, we're being enslaved by the big corporrate world, buying into their false idea's of Christmas and what it should be and was it "is".
These year, I have decided not to buy my family anything, but making them something I take pride in and always put lots of love into. Not only because money is tight for me, but because I have recently realized my own fault of indulging in the Christmas idea that at least the western world society buys into.
Someone goes out buys you the newest Ipod and your thrilled! but how much time was put into that? how much love and effort was put into the trip to Bestbuy or futureshop?( They're Canadian stores I think, but basically they sell t.v's, video camara's electronics etc...)
If someone bakes you your absolute favorite cookies, candy or dessert, you know they spent atleast an hour and a half, making something catered just to You. Sure other people in the world are going to Loveee chocolate chip cookies, but are they going to be grandma's reciepe with that secret ingredient? No sir they are not. I am not saying everyone forget buying people anything, but maybe trying making them something. I am also not saying if you don't make them something, hey your a jerk and don't really love them. But you need patiance to make that batch of 2 dozen nanimo squares that your aunt eats up at the family Christmas dinners.
This year I am going to donate things to the local shelter, God only knows how much thing I have that I don't need anymore. I am a pack rat what can I say?
This Christmas, maybe we'd all learn something about our family, or about ourselves, if we just took the time to spend a day making things. God knows I have learned something already, I have longer attention span that I thought, and I can make damn good cookies :)
Cheers Folks.

Hi Cupcake! I loved your posting because, although most of us here in America have not had the opportunity to be stressed out yet (waiting for the stress of our Thursday's Thanksgiving cooking and gatherings to be over first), it begins in full-swing on Friday. I'll be busy for over a week, just getting the many decoration boexes out of storage, testing out all of the outdoor lights and decorating everything. Since I have kids, I do it for them. Otherwise I have to say that I'm with you in your thinking. For years, I've just wanted to take a vacation from the traditional hoopla of all of the superficial. My son and his girlfriend currently have no jobs so I suggested they get each other something homemade. Unfortunately, they don't see the value in that idea (still looking for jobs, they are). I love homemade gifts the best and have given them to others often. One year I started a project during the summer before, taking my parents' massive collection of photos and organized them onto a computer (or DVD player)CD, making copies for all the family members to enjoy. Everyone loved it - the gift that still remains their favorite especially since the parents moved away and one sibling is living far away. And the carmel popcorn balls that I make every year? Well, that is one of the few receipes that I will never share with anyone so the receipients look forward to them every year. Anyway, your idea makes a lot of sense to me. :)
