 How Junk Food Defines America
Our country nowadays thrives on junk food. We constantly pine for creamy chocolate, crispy potato chips. and loaded hot dogs piled a mile high with onions, ketchup, and pickles. Sugar-free and fat-free versions of our favorite Lays and Pringles chips have taken a stand in the grocery stores, but still, there's nothing like the real thing. Americans are constantly chugging down bottles of Coke and Sprite, running off to McDonalds to grab a juicy hot Big Mac, or buying hundred-pack boxes of Slim Jims for their kids. Our country is just imcomplete without the supply of greasy and sugary foods. Foods that we hate and love at the same time.
Have you ever felt strange trying to watch a football game without a plate of piping hot buffalo wings next to you? Or sat down in Pizza Hut and ordered a plate of salad instead of a hearty serving of the norm Meatzza Pizza? Eating for fun is one of America's favorite pasttimes. When your kids come home, where do they head first? The desk to do their homework, or the fridge to try out that new soda you bought yesterday? If your husband wanted to take you out to dinner, what are the chances he's going to take you to a gourmet French restaurant versus the chances he wants to go out for fried chicken and fries?
During the summer, we are scraping the bottoms of Ben & Jerry's ice cream cartons for the last drippings of Cherry Garcia ice cream and feeding coins into the vending machines every two minutes for ice cold Cokes and Nesteas. In fall, many are trying to sneak into their child's room to snatch up that pack of Junior Mints they had collected for Halloween. In winter, we eat so many candy canes, and drink mugs of hot chocolate by the hour. In spring, there is Easter, where chocolate eggs and Peeps, those sugar-coated yummy marshamllows rule the roost. Year round, we enjoy buckets of hot, buttery popcorn while watching movies.
Junk food. We love it because it, being America's comfort food, placates us. We hate it because it makes us get fat. Period.
