ok Be warned...I wrote this about a month ago at 3 in the morning...So please excuse the shitty-ness of it
Darkness
He stopped walking and looked around. The park. Perfect. He leaned against the light pole right outside the gates where he used to come every day to write. That’s where he met her. How long ago, it seemed, when she was with him. A lifetime.
He had one leg pulled up behind him, resting on the base of the metal pole, his hat pulled down low to cover his eyes, as he swung a set of keys around his finger and stared at his shadow on the side walk. He laughed to himself, thinking he looked like Clark Gable in one of those old black and white love stories. The way he was dressed, he could have been. He had always loved the old fashions, the look of the 1920’s gangster. It fit him. He wore a black suit with subtle white pinstripes, with the matching fedora pulled low to his forehead.
But this was no love story. Someone like him couldn’t be in love. How could he? Who would want to love a monster like him? No one. He was alone. Always alone. That’s the way things had to be. That way, no one got hurt.
But He could still hear her laugh. It rang out like bells in his mind. He would never forget that laugh, or her beautiful smile.
“Dane, what are you writing today?”
“Why does it interest you so much, Khenna?”
“Well, I want to know what’s going on inside that little brain of yours!”
She laughed. God, that laugh.
As if on cue, a couple strolled around the corner, walking hand in hand; The girl giggling at some quiet joke her lover had whispered in her ear. It pulled him out of his daydream, if you could call it that since it was after midnight. He glared at them, hating their happiness. The happiness that he himself, could never have. How he despised them and their love. They should be miserable, like he had to be.
And they would be. Wrong place, wrong time.
The woman stopped dead in her tracks, jerking her man’s hand, signaling him to stop.
“James, I think I heard something.”
“Honey, your just being paranoid. There’s no one out here. Its nearly one o’clock. Who would be out this late?” If he only knew.
“James, I’m serious. I heard someone. Lets go, please?”
“Ok, ok. Just hold onto my hand. I wont let anyone hurt you, darling.”
Ha. He didn’t know how wrong he was.
Dane sank back into the darkness, becoming nothing more than his own shadow, as the couple walked closer to where he stood. They were in mumbled conversation, unaware what was about to happen. Closer and closer they walked, and all he had to do was wait for the right moment. They were Just a few feet away now, and he crouched low in the darkness, waiting…
Now. They passed right in front of him, and he sprang into action. He leapt up and grabbed the females arm, breaking her grasp on her lovers hand, as he slammed his elbow into the man’s ribs. He heard them snap, and the man dropped to his knees as his breath was forced from his lungs, making it impossible for him to scream. Good, Dane thought, makes things easier. He covered the woman’s mouth with his free hand, and with one swift kick, tossed the man into the bushes near by. The woman struggled in his arms, thrashing at his face trying to get free, but Dane’s grip was too strong for her to shake loose. He stepped backward, dragging the woman into the bushes, where her lover lay coughing and gasping, trying to catch his breath, but unable to do so for the broken ribs he had received from Dane’s crippling blow.
To quiet the woman, Dane put his arm around her neck, pushing her head down over his elbow, cutting off her breath. Slowly, she stopped fighting, and he slid her down to the ground as she fainted. It wont be long now, Dane thought to himself, and they wont fight me anymore.
He crept into the bushes where they both lay, and the night was still.
