| Time. |
This blog is heavily inspired by Pink Floyd, so I'm just going to include the lyrics, for reference, as well as inspiration.
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but its sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but youre older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the english way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought Id something more to say
Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
And when I come home cold and tired
Its good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells.
This song is aptly named Time, and it's one of my favorite songs off their album Dark Side Of The Moon.
Now it doesn't take a rocket scientist to decipher that the song is about time. But I'm talking about the nature of time, not so much how it works.
Time is our worst enemy.
It's the one thing we can never get more of. We've got it, but our time is always running out, and it has been since the second the sperm swam through the cervix and hit that egg. Time is the most valuable resource we have. We have time. If you're reading this, you have time. For now. So why then, do we go about our lives lost in our own world, ignoring the world around us. The world that created us. Honestly, I'm going to say this in the least Christian way possible, but we've turned our backs on our creator.
Ancient cultures, they knew their shit when it came to time. Almost every single one of their great structures was devoted to time. The observation of the heavens was just the measuring of time on a grand scale. The pyramids, Stonehenge, Obelisks, the list goes on. All of these cultures had a cyclical view of time. It was never a straight line as we perceive it today, but rather a circle that would eventually renew and start again from the remnants of the old. I mean, that's how nature on Earth operates. Shit, that's how the universe operates. Trees die, return their nutrients to the soil, and new life sprouts. A star explodes and releases its mass which eventually combines to form a new star or planet. Nature is cyclical.
But time... the destroyer of youth, innocence, and everything you will ever build, why was it revered? Why worship the one thing working against humanity more than anything else? It just didn't make sense to me.
But then I realized I was looking at it all wrong. I was looking at time as a typical human being would. How does time affect ME? Why does time screw ME over? Then it hit me that I was just absorbed in my own self awareness. To comprehend time, which is MUCH bigger then us, we have to think outside of our own existence. Look at nature as a whole. Think of the entire evolutionary chain! Look what time has given us! Over time, miniscule changes in the DNA of organisms eventually have brought us here. Time's purpose in this world is much more then simply bringing an end to things, sometimes, it brings a beginning.
So after I realized that, I realized how depressing that is for the individual. It's ego crushing to know that you're simply a pawn to test microevolution. So then, in order to prevent myself from driving to the I-90 bridge and jumping off, I thought of how this could possibly be good for humans. And what I've decided is this, use your time wisely, don't waste it, use it to experience every beautiful thing you want to.
Become the master of your time, and you've become the master of the world.
Praise Pink!
