"Our freedom is the right and power to decide how anybody or anything outside ourselves will affect us."
--Stephen Covey--
Valentine's Day ... a day that puts dread and fear into the strongest of hearts. I have already read several posts, penned by authors, expressing worry and concern how they will make it through this day of love. A day when (if one were to believe the media) every human being, rests safe and warm in the arms of their lover. Every human being, that is, expect the one whose life lacks romantic love.
For many years my life has lacked romantic love. Oh, how I dreaded this day of hearts and flowers. I prepared for it as one would prepare for their day of execution. I awoke Valentine's morning, dressed in sackcloth and ashes and packed a lunch consisting of a heavy heart, tears and hopelessness.
Then the day came when a new thought entered my mind. Could it be that Valentine's Day did not hold the power to bring sadness and dread into my life ... could it be that my perception of this day was the culprit of all my misery? A quote by Greg Barrette flashed through my mind...
Take responsibility for your perceptions.
Rise above the victim role.
Understand that nothing out there
has any real power over you.
Life's events can never harm you
only your attitude or reaction to them can.
Valentine's Day is a day to celebrate love. Yes, romantic love is one kind of love, but there are other kinds of love ... self love, the love of family and friends, etc. Other loves that I am blessed to have in my life. Why not focus and celebrate these types of love on Valentine's Day.
I no longer dread this day. I have been set free from the Valentine's Day curse! I plan something special for myself and look forward to doing it. I call family members and friends to say "I Love You" ... "I'm blessed to have you in my life" ... "I'm thinking of you." I send a card or bake cookies for someone whose life is touched by sickness, death or sorrow. Valentine's Day is not about sex and romance ... it's a day to celebrate love, a day to spread some love around.
Grab a spatula.
Get creative.
Spread away.
If you find yourself alone and unable to get on board with this line of thinking, I have the following to say to every seeker of romantic love ....
Someone is waiting to love you.
Someone is praying for your arrival.
You are the answer to someone's prayer.
You are special.
You are unique.
You are lovable.
The circumstances you find yourself in are only for this moment and NOT for all time.
This Valentine's Day I'm going to say a prayer for each person who finds themselves living a life minus romantic love. Let's start a group hug here and pray for each other. If you seek romantic love ... if you are in search of "the one" leave me a comment. Let someone know there are other seekers of romance out there. Please join our Valentine's Day group hug ... don't miss out ... space is unlimited and all (seekers and finders of love) are welcome.
Peace & Love |

Valetines ..what? Valentines Day is now something that I enjoyed when I was young.... do you remember making Valentines Day cards in the classroom, and you put a special message in it and wrote "From your secret Admirer?" that was fun, then you'd put it in a hat and the teacher would distribute them when you went out to play? We'd all have one when we got back, we wouldn't know who they were from. But it was fun to pretend we had secret admirers...
That's what Valentines Day is to me (now) a play day where you are allowed to pretend!

Another beautiful post from a beautiful person. I love your outlook. Hell, let's not forget that this was a holiday invented by a greeting card company. It's really like Pepsi inventing soda day.
