The Governor's Wife

I was moved to write this post after reading Roe's post "sins of the husband and father, devastating" regarding the fall from grace of New York Governor, Eliot Spitzer.

As Governor Spitzer gave his apology speech my eyes were glued on his wife, Silda Spitzer.  My heart ached for her.  I wondered what her thoughts were.  Was she beating herself up thinking, "if I would have lost those extra pounds ... worked out more ... been a better lover, perhaps my husband wouldn't have sought pleasure elsewhere"?

While I'm not a fan of marriage and have some radical views on love I do get and respect the "stand by your man" concept.  Still, why was she even there ... she had done nothing wrong.

What kind of message does this send to the young women of tomorrow and women in general?  When our man does something wrong the right thing to do is stand by, in silence, holding his hand.  Furthermore what kind of message does this send to men ... "hey I can do whatever I want and my woman will be there to help me clean up the mess when it all comes crashing down.

Maybe I'm not as big of a person as Mrs. Spitzer, but I can assure you I would not have been at that press conference.  Men need to know there are consequences to bad behavior.  Women need to get a little backbone and start standing up for themselves.  I think Silda Spitzer's absence would have sent a powerful wake up message to both men and women.  Women, stand up for yourselves ... men if you choose to play around and cheat on your woman her love and support will be withdrawn and you will face the consequences alone.  Perhaps I'm being much to harsh here, but that's my opinion.

AMEN TO THAT!!!! Good Call Colorado!
There is no way under God's Green Earth I could have even stood up there. I would ov ended up smack'en him up along the back of his head..."Take that...and that...and that you gross Idiot!" But that is just my little opinion.
God Bless now! :)

Just to play devil's advocate.. maybe the reason she was there was for her own personal interest and not due to emotional weakness? Maybe she's using him for his position or money and so wanted him to keep his job and so, in order for him to do that, she wanted to show the public/media that "Hey, I forgive him so should you". I have no evidence to back that up, I'm just throwing it out there as a possible reason she would be there. The other reason explanation is what you've already suggested, that she wanted to stand by her man and work things out.

Hi Hairytoad2005 --

Thanks for dropping by my blog and presenting us with another viewpoint. I would imagine there are many perks and niceties that come with being a Governor's wife. Your point may very well have been the case.

After I wrote this post I also thought that perhaps, Silda, felt she had no other choice. A public or political figure loses much of themselves, as advisors plan every move and practically think your thoughts for you ... all with the goal of winning or keeping you in a particular coveted position. Maybe that's why so many men and women, in powerful positions, fall from grace. Living a life that's not authentic is difficult and spirit breaking.

As for Eliot and Silda Spitzer, life as they know it is history. I just read that the Governor resigned this morning. Maybe a blessing in disguise. I wish them well as they start the process (out of the public eye) of putting their lives back together.

KeepDreaming -- Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts, on this subject. Your handling of the situation made me smile. I don't think you or I would make very good political wives. We are both much to free spirited. Love and peace to you, girlfriend.

I have to agree with Hairy Toad and CO Dreamin. Sometimes, we act in haste and regret our decisions. Silda might not have had much time to digest this and come to the conclusion I wish she'd come to. Leave his sorry ass.

And, maybe being a Governor's wife is all that? Don't know and don't care! Nothing is worth losing my self-respect! What I DO know is that if she's got daughters, sisters, nieces, and girlfriends, she let them ALL down. She let herself down, as well.

He would have appeared alone if he'd been married to me...

Great post! Thanks for that. XXX

I thought about her a lot. I don't know what she must feel but I bet it's a huge betrayal. I pray that her and her daughter's are ok. It's sad that he had everything and it was not good enough. I don't know if I could stand by him. I definitely would not have been by his side at that press conference. She must either be very strong or very weak, depending on how you look at it.

Greetings ColoradoDreamin:

Great post...At some point we all must face our fears and our mistakes. It is so unfortunately that we have to hurt the ones that we love so dearly when we screw up. I am sure he loved his family very much, and I am most certain that he loved the job he was doing for the people of New York. But for him to do such a dumb thing is beyond me. Although I heard one commentary say that here was a brillant man, with lots of education, but no street smarts. I must agree with that, because most teenagers could have told him just how to avoid making such a dumb mistake. He now must face the music and pay the piper. He did it to himself.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Much love,

Davis

Stand by my man?
More like, stand by my man, while I give him his ring back.
I like this attitude.

whoo! I did all my bad while still very young.I was terminally stupid, and even now do not 'get' why I did it.
My wife did take me back, but she was not the fragile girl I cheated on. Thank God there was no press conference for me, she would have grabbed the mike and had a few words of her own to say.Rough waters ahead Governor, wear a flak vest under your life jacket.
