 Gardening in the Winter???
I am always getting sad when Fall approaches and leaves are coming down, and flowers are dying. And I do like the snow and winters, but I want to bring in all the potted plants and flowers from the yard, but then I would have to move out....
I do have to bring in some, since they will die if they stay out, so what do I do to feel still like a gardener in the middle of the winter...

Of course we all know about forcing bulbs, ok I am not so hot on those

I do mini container gardening...

I pick a very low round or oval container, I add some stones on the bottom then fill up half with potting soil and
I go to the gardening center and buy mini plants from them it is almost like a terrarium kind of set up, but my flat
mini gardens look more like a mini garden bed, I then plant the little mini plants and I try to find those that
bloom at one point or another and depending on where  you set them inside the home, some will do better than others (and if you know that that's what you will do next Fall/Winter, then you may just do some cuttings from the yard put them in water for rooting and use those)

Once I planted some of the cuttings I made myself, or little mini plants I bought for 1.99 or so
I then try to add a branch I cut from a bush or tree outside, add some little stones sometimes I pick pepples at the beaches of Lake Michigan, but any smaller stones will do and I create a landscaping set up and if I have a little figurine that can fit inside I do that as well, They are fun to look at, they are easy to take care of and if you want to buy some moss to cover up the ground it will take longer before they need watering.

Next time when I come back to my blog I will mention some of the flowers and plants that work really well....

Now if  you have a very sunny spot and want to do this with cacti, wow great idea
instead of potting soil take white play sand or collect sand from the beach, plant your cacti, add decorative items
and spray them with water from time to time, they do not need a lot of care just light and sun...

They are fun and any active Gardener will love them.... as they replace the work with flowers, plants and
soil during the winter months

Hope you like these ideas, I will follow up with photos and with names of plants I have used before.

My passion is also gardening. I live in Australia, where the weather is milder. Your blog is very good to give people ideas that it is still possible to do gardening even in winter time. Indoor gardening is very rewarding. By the way, I also have some cacti and many succulents. Some cactus have lovely flowers...My other passion is bonsai, if you would like to learn more, I had it written in one of my previous blogs. I'll be looking forward to read your next entry.
