| Religious Types Are Offended By Questioning
I think much of the reason why deeply-religious people are offended by agnostics and atheists is because they see doubt or disbelief in a deity as a direct challenge to their belief systems. If someone states they doubt, or deny the existence of a 'higher power', highly-religious people are easily offended because they see that idea as negating everything they believe in. In a way it is true; if one doesn't believe in God or has serious doubts about his existence, someone who deeply believes will want to correct what they perceive as 'the wrong way to think'. But this is precisely what drives me nuts about these people - they do not seem to understand that EVERYTHING about God is a belief, and not a hard fact. I feel like I can accept people who are deeply 'into the religious thing', but it doesn't often feel like the reverse is true. I also happen to believe there are a lot more people like me out there than people are willing to admit, for fear of being ridiculed or cast as an 'American outsider'. I'm not an outsider at all. I just have my doubts concerning the existence of a deity. I think a little skepticism - or at least an ability to think outside your own faith - is a sign of an intelligent mind. |

i think you think right! you'll find plenty of people here who challenge such thoughts. this is no place for judgement, so everyone is honest. and you find a lot of people you have a lot in common with... good luck! :D

Yeah put so much of themselves into believing that to even consider it all might be one of many man-made myths would destroy their little worlds. Also they're in such fear of the fantasy of eternal damnation they become willing to believe in anything... just in case.

Thanks for the comments, guys... as they used to say, 'each to his own' is the healthiest way to live one's life.
