We moved into the house next door to ours. Back then when I was only five it seemed to be much bigger than now. Do you ever notice how things change when you grow up? When you’re a kid the world seems endless and even the town you live in seems endless.
My mother and father we’re excited that this was their first house together and they were going to buy it. I like the house but it didn’t have carpet and it smelled like cats and dogs. My room was huge compared to my little cubical of a room I used to have. I was an only child so I had many toys. Other children were very jealous of me and my possessions. Other children had brothers and sisters, not me I’m forever an only child.
We painted my room pink, it was my favorite color, my mother told me. On weekends we would go to the flee market. It was there that I got my “big girl” bed. It was a great upgrade from my short child bed.
I was only five but it seemed as though I was growing up quick. Not to quick though I was still afraid of the dark.
At night I would sneak into my parent’s room and ask for my mother. She would lift the covers to let me into the bed. Those were my favorite times. When I felt close to her heart and I felt safe.
Other times she would be angry and tell me to go back to my room. I would leave her dark room and go to my darker room where the monsters were. But later in the night I would seek back into my parent’s room with my blanket and pillow. I’d sleep by the foot of their bed so I would disturb them.
I guess at five my mother and father thought I was to big to be a baby. I didn’t feel that way, I never did.
My favorite times hanging out with my father was when we played video games. Duck Hunt was my favorite. In that game you got to shoot a gun and when you missed a doggie would laugh at you. I hated the doggie. I hated losing, especially in front of my Daddy.
My dad taught me most of the important stuff that you need to know when you’re little. He taught me how to ride a bike, how to swim, and tie my shoes. I remember learning how to tie my shoes the most it’s the most vivid memory of when I was five.
I remember the time and place. We were in the living room and the sun was about to set so there was little light in the room. I think he taught me because he got sick of tying them for me. I learned quickly though I’ve always been a quick learner.
When it was my sixth birthday my father moved out. I cried over birthday cake and ice cream. I looked out the back door and saw my fathers black lab he left me. I thought of him and possibly never seeing my father again. I thought I would never be the same again. |
