| The Merits of Speech vs. Silence

I am experiencing a strange phenomenon; I watched a movie that has actually provoked more than a few minutes of retrospection on what I would consider to be a key phrase in the film. The movie is "The Painted Veil" and the phrase under consideration is spoken by Naomi Watts to Edward Norton (the character of her husband) who fails to respond to her when she is talking to him. He says he became accustomed to not speaking when he had nothing to say, and her response was, "If no one spoke because they had nothing to say, the human race would soon lose the power to speak."
I would cast myself in the same lot with Mr. Norton in this situation, when I have nothing particularly awe inspiring to say then I remain silent. In some cases I would say silence is better than to make a fool of yourself by speaking something you would later wished to have kept unvoiced.
However, in always seeking to appear intelligent, you miss out on opportunities for a scintillating conversation that brings a real sense of comradery between people. Only when you can be entirely open and honest will you truly begin to know someone.

I don't think I can Choose sides Just yet. Sure silence is a great choice.
I would rather be silent. But For you to gain the trust and honesty, you must first open your mouth. How would you connect with someone through total silence? Eye contact? LMAO
So, On either page is a good point.
