| "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways..."

This poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) is my favorite poem of all time. It "grabs" the human heart with all its emotions, and puts it into words. Having experienced this depth of love, I understand just what Elizabeth meant when she wrote it. It makes me cry everytime. I thought I would share.
"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways..."
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with a passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, --- I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death. |

This is one of my favorites also. Every time I read it another line pops out at me with new beauty and meaning. Today it was "childhood's faith" ... the faith of a child, so pure and beautiful ... not jaded in any way shape or form. How delightful finding this poem here for my reading pleasure. Thank You For Sharing. Peace.

I know what you mean about the effect of this poem. I too think about "childhood's faith" the way you do.
"I love thee to the level of everyday's Most quiet need"...It makes me think of the most quiet moment in any given day, anywhere in the world.
ah what a wonderful poem.
Thanks for reading!
