 Happy Thanksgiving!
THE MARINE-2006-You would have thought after the debacle of NO HOLDS BARRED in the ‘80’s dirt bag wrestling owner Vince McMahon Jr. would have learned his lesson about making movies. But of course being the self-centered bastard that he is, Junior decided the time was right to try it again. Too bad for us all! All he could come up with was a cheap Swartzenegger rip-off starring the guy, John Cena who at the time happened to be the champion of McMoron’s wrestling promotion. Every cliché’ in the book is thrown in. Explosions abound. It’s the kind of action flick that gives CGI a bad name. Robert Patrick is the bad guy who kills a lot of people (there’s even a TERMINATOR in joke). Director John Bonito had previously done work for wrestling on TV. Hopefully we will never hear from him again. Chuck this shit and go watch John Woo’s HARDBOILED!

THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND-2006-Forrest Whittaker was touted by nearly everyone as a shoo-in to win the best actor Academy Award (which he did win) for his portrayal of Idi Amin, “president for life” of the African nation of Uganda. He’s good but he’s practically a secondary character as the disappointing story is told from the standpoint of a Scottish doctor (James McAvoy; also in THE CHRONICLES OF NARIA) who comes to the country just as Amin has taken over in a military coup. He “wants to make a difference” but winds up under the thrall of the charismatic and loony leader, becoming his personal physician and “closest advisor”. He has an affair with one of Amin’s wives and comes to regret most of his decisions. It ends 24 hours before Israel raids Entebbe (also the subject of a couple of movies). It also features Gillian Armstrong and Kerry Washington. Director Kevin Macdonald (grandson of Emeric Pressburger) was previously known mostly for his documentaries about other directors (Howard Hawks, Donald Cammell and Errol Morris).

I've heard of both these films. Last King of Scotland seems like a good film with an excellent performance from Forrest Whittaker. The last time I saw him in a movie was in Panic Room starring Jodie Foster.
