Pondering- Sheltered Mental Deterioration

I was wondering if it was possible to believe you are a genuis, but in actuality be bellow average, i dont mean being so arrogant that you just "know" your a genius, but actually being so sheltered from your own thoughts and even the thoughts of others that you really didnt know you your true intelect?

I guess the starting point here is what is the meaning of intelligence & where does genius fit in with this.
