Not something you want. Malaria has always loomed in the back of my galaxy of reasons I never wanted to go to a third world country. Scary stuff. Cannibals scare me too. Poison dart shooting pygmies and of course, Anaconda!
Would you rather die by the stings of a thousand ants or by being boiled by someone you knew was going to eat you? Would you rather be blind or deaf with one leg? My kids ask me these preposterous questions and I tell them I’d rather go to Bush Gardens. Why would I want to entertain myself by thinking about such violent things? Thank you Hollywood.
Still, there are those in the world who suffer from unimaginable mistreatment and malady, and much of it can be prevented.
President and Mrs. Bush recently completed yet another trip to Africa, where they helped (in a really big way) distribute aid (from U.S.) to Malaria stricken nations in the form of treated mosquito netting, and treatment medicine. No president has ever done more in the battle against this mosquito carried killer.
Malaria is the number one killer of children on the continent of Africa, as well as in many other nations. Every year over a million children under the age of five die from this preventable disease. Why am I telling you this? I want to do something to help. The World help organization World Vision is about to announce a partnership with a wonderful organization called Malaria No More. Perhaps you saw the recently broadcast program, American Idol gives back. This show did much to raise money and awareness of this serious problem. April 25th is World Malaria Day. Check them out at MalariaNoMore.org.
I think that I could make a difference by simply pointing out the need, and how easily an individual can make a difference. Through World Vision, Kathy and I sponsor a wonderful little girl who lives in La Paz, Bolivia. We send letters back and forth, and even sent her family a Christmas gift.
I’d like to encourage my friends and readers to spend a few minutes at WorldVision.com, and learn about how you can make a difference in the fight against AIDS, Malaria and World Hunger. Jesus said, “Whatsoever you do to the least of these, you do unto me.”
