Euthanasia and abortion have a common question:

What constitutes human life. All life is precious, even the annoying cockroach or rattlesnake has its place on this planet. I have trouble killing anything that is alive, but I will do it. For instance, when a misquoto bites me I slap at it and kill it. When an animal is suffering, I kill it, etc.

But, we hold human life most dear, although from time to time some human life forms I find intolerable, child molesters for example. But the real challenge is to define what makes life human. For example, when someone is brain dead, I believe that what you see surviving on the machines is not human life. It is some composite life form, half biological, half machine. Because it reminds us of a human that did live, perhaps someone dear to us, we are reluctant to unplug the life form, but we can say with some certainilty, which is never 100%, that human life has left the body that once was human. This seems to imply that humanity is not defined by just a body, or even less so my a bunch of cells. When do a group of cells become a human life.

So, what defines the human condition. Perhaps the abilities to think, to decide, to feel, to love, to fear, etc. Surely, it must be based on some group of human capabilities that involve our ability to think and practice our humanity. Even the ability to hate, would count.

Even more, it cannot be a temporary interruption in the ability to feel, love, hate, think etc. And if these traits have never existed, but only have the potential to produce a thinking, feeling person, then I would say that human life has not yet happened.

So, the essence of these issues come down to our ability to define and identify human life, to define what it mean to be human. To me, I want to err on the side preserving life, I don't want to pull the plug to soon, but neither do I want to cause suffering in the world by not pulling the plug.

And, to take the subject one step further, for another blog perhaps, is when does one's suffering justify the termination of life, either by the one suffering or his or her 's love one.

People people!! Chill the beans!! Everyone is entitled to their view but I don't see why angry swearing and insults is necessary. It's certainly not going to make anyone change their minds. BrooklynsSong, I kind of agree with you. I don't like the idea of abortion, especially now that there are so many people who want to adopt; but sometimes it is necessary, like if letting the foetus survive would kill the mother. Still, I don't believe it is alive at all until the heart starts beating, so before then I don't consider it wrong to abort. But that is just my opinion, other people can think differently.

That said, all you other people, there is no need to be so harsh about it. You may only consider a baby to be a parasite, but that's a very cold way to look at it, and there is certainly no need to be rude, even if you don't agree with her views or the way she presented it.
