 Wutz th wyrld cmng 2?
Let me just say up front that I'm a huge fan of the English language.  I love words.  I love how they can be combined in so many different and wonderful ways to evoke emotions, paint pictures in our heads, convey information, or connect us together.  Words are what make friends of complete strangers right here on this site.

If I had my druthers, I'd prefer to read material that's been spelled reasonably well, and constructed in such a way that it makes some sort of sense.  I'll freely admit to having blundered into many a post which I've found to be teeth-grindingly illiterate and turned and run like my butt was on fire!  It's almost enough to make me want to wash my eyes out with soap!  (Okay, I may be exercising my right to poetic license and exaggerating a wee bit...that would just be silly...and painful!)

So, now that I've taken my stand on literacy, let me tell you about a conversation I had the other day with a young lady I work with.  We were dicussing my opinion (ha ha) that the English language is swirling the bowl.  I was blathering on about how nobody cares about spelling or grammar anymore.  Punctuation has gone the way of the dinosaur.  Even some of the business emails I receive are borderline moronic.  It's as though our communication skills have disolved into a puddle of text messaged ooze.

Well, the young lady looked a tad startled at my rabid out-pouring and, to my extreme astonishment, informed me that (get this shit) they actually TEACH kids to write like that ON PURPOSE!  She is taking a class at school called something like "Internet English," wherein they are TAUGHT to forego punctuation, capitalization, and spelling in the interest of brevity!  Say WHAT??

I was literally horrified at this news!  At first I thought she was yanking my chain, but, alas, not so much.  She was dead serious!  She actually joked that I should get with the times, that it was the wave of the future.  She babbled on in this vein for a while but I missed most of it because I'm pretty sure I was having a stroke!!  She said something to the effect that ours is now a world of text messaging and instant messaging and that speed is of the essence when using these mediums to communicate.  (Obviously she didn't word it quite as well as that!  I'm paraphrasing!)

Now that I've had a chance to mull this turn of events over in my head, I'm envisioning our literary future.  Imagine wandering in to a book store, if such things will still exist, and picking up a three-page copy of something which has been written in these modern-day hieroglyphics!

Those of us who actually still enjoy our language, and this applies to whichever language you speak, or who enjoy reading, will be out-moded by this "wave of the future."  I hereby vow that I will go to my grave punctuating and spelling and if not grammatically correct, at least grammatically damned close!

IDK wtf ur prblm iz bc i cn read ths jst fyn

I fear teasing about the disease is infecting you all as you speak:P

Reading this after just seeing the new Iron Man movie, I feel compelled to make a comparison. Seeing a newer teacher want to teach inaccurate English sounds as infuriating as the villain of the movie turning Stark's technology against him. I feel the need to strap on my own suit of armor and go to war with these illiteracy selling people. Texting is not a language!!![Although, I suppose it could simplify learning to some degree. But, UGH!]

I suppose no one will send YOU hate mail for this post about bad spelling and grammar, BootLady. NoOOoo, leave the shit-shovelling and arguments to me and my old post that set the site on fire for a day or two and trickled into a "continental divide". Anyway, that's all been put to rest...I think.

i am an advocate of this modern world but there are certain modern tech things that i find amusing. one of these is text messaging or internet writing. my view is that, it's not bad to learn new things or technology or skill but we should not forget or try to learn what is good from the past. and that includes good spelling and grammar.

talk, speak and act like a japanese while in japan and talk, speak and act like an american while in america. your brown skin? well, that's another story! lol

Hmmm...a challenge from Easy with a little nudge from Tony...as much as I'd love to oblige, I'm pretty sure I'd snap before I was halfway through writing it! And even if I managed to get it done, you guys would be lobbing tomatoes at me and issuing red flags all over the place! They should have a button that says "flag this entry as incoherent!" tyvm 4 ur cmmntz lol

Hi there, espada! I agree completely! One of the cool things about Thoughts.com is that there IS no skin! Okay, that was kinda gross, but you get the idea!
