 Thinking About Doug
All day long I've been thinking about Doug out there on his bike.  Riding to raise money for MS.  I think about his bad knee and all the training he did for this event.  Was the training enough?  Will his knee hold up?  What about the head injury he suffered just a few short months ago.  His doc told him that doing this ride was maybe not such a brilliant plan in view of the major bonk on the head he'd sustained.  I hope he's okay.

So, why's he doing this?  He's doing it for love, I think.  One love.  He's doing it to remember Sydney. Who?  Sydney.  She was a blogger here for a painfully short time.  She had MS.  It got the best of her.  In the short time she was here, she touched us.  We miss her.

Doug got this crazy idea in his head that he wanted to honour her somehow.  He wanted to raise money to fight the insideous disease which claimed her.  Sydney was a part of this awesome family.  If you don't think Thoughts.com is a family, think again.  To some of us, the bloggers of Thoughts are the only ones we know who really care about us and our lives.

We're really just a bunch of internet strangers.  If not for Thoughts.com, we would live out our lives without ever knowing each other, never knowing what we were missing.  And Doug would be most likely working this weekend instead of pouring out his blood, sweat, and heart to honour someone he's never met and never will.

Doug is out there right now, riding his bike.  One hundred miles today, and another hundred tomorrow.  I hope he makes it, but, even if he doesn't, I'm damn proud of that boy.  He personifies what I believe Thoughts to be.

It doesn't get any better than this.

One love.

:-) You are right about that boots. I have been thinking about him too! I know he is wanting to upload pics. I hope he has access now. This was a wonderful thing Dougie did. I wish I could have contributed more. GO DOUGIE!! ~One Love.

I have been a little disenchanted with Thoughts lately, well, more correctly with some of the "happenings" on Thoughts, but it is people like, Doug, that keep me coming back. I didn't have the special pleasure of knowing the blogger Sydney on any personal level only by virtue of what Doug had told me about her in our conversations and by the links he sent me as she had passed away well before I came to Thoughts...she did by all accounts seem to be a special person, and so is our, Doug. He would have to be one of the biggest hearted guys I have had the pleasure of encountering, and indeed, he epitomises the "One Love" philosophy. It's great to see something good, selfless, and heartwarming weave through all the sniping, mean-spititedness that has permeated Thoughts of late. GO DOUG!!! :o)

Doug hadn't mentioned anything about a head injury to me...please be well during your ride, Doug. *worries* -- Stormy.

I hear ya, Stormy. It's been kind grim around here lately. Don't give up on Thoughts! It's an awesome place to hang :)

It sure is nice having "crazy" friends of Doug's caliber around here. Nicely said,Boots.

Just wanted to add this quote from Cully-"Live life as though it were a cartoon; animated, colourful and as though it has the potential for the fantastical." - Cully. I think it's quite fitting here.

I couldn't agree more, cabin-guy! Doug rocks, and Cully does too :) I love that quote!

You can add me to that cheerleading squad I have been watching Dougs progress since right after he started this trip.I have learned that he is a kind, caring person with a heart of gold and has the qualities it takes to be a true friend.

Amen to that, Nana! Good to have you on the squad :)

Boots I will have to say I enjoy the company of the people I have met on here. We talk on the phone, text, fart around on FB, and video chat from time to time. And like with my family I am quick to jump in someone's ass for starting crap with someone I care about on here. Doug and I exchanged Christmas cards this past Christmas just like I did with a few others on here. I exchanged gifts with EastToSay and I did spend 4 hours talking to her once on the phone. I like to take the friendships I've made on here and bring them into the real world, which seems more like a virtual world then here, but this is not the place to write a Man Cave. Yes a shameful plug I know but I do enjoy all the people I have met here. I even remember the first response you left me you said "Damn! This guy's onto us, girls". So yup I have been sitting here most of the day wondering how Doug is doing and I would think that he has to be done with the first leg of this course. Hopefully we will hear from him soon.

Doug is as humble a person as there is in 'thoughts'. He loves his Grandma, so he initiated the Christmas-card exchange, not for Doug, for Grandma. He makes holiday dinner for foreign co-workers, and he has surpassed all efforts with this bike-a-thon, he is truly an admirable human being. One Love. You pick 'em well, boots.

You're pretty amazing yourself, circe! There sure are some treasures here, eh?

I have only known Doug a short time but in that time he has come to be a very special friend and I am really glad that you wrote this blog to pay tribute to his efforts. Looks like he has done his first 100 miles and now we cheer him through the next.

Thanks, Moxi. I'm sure we'll all be waiting to hear how Day 2 went. I just hope there's some of him left to tell the tale! :)

At one time Doug was Doug. You know what i mean? But now as I sit here myself with MS and others here aso, Doug is now a hero. One who is bringing more attention to this horrible disease. Crazy disease and one that is totaly unpredictable.
Sydney from what I have heard had to be one special person. She also had to have won a special place in Dougs heart.
Don't worry about the bang on the head. Worry more about the knee. I mean that.kudo's to you Doug. And my thank you again.
Posted by  kal  on 2009-09-12 23:55:40

Kal, I did not realize that you were afflicted by MS. It truly IS a horrible disease. It takes a whole other level of courage to fight against it. I know that Doug would say that what he's doing is nothing compared to what you do every day.

Bravo Boots! I know the 'old thoughts' is still here under some of the rubbish. If we look really hard.... we still find each other and the love is still there. I still think of Sydney.... I know she'll be up there somewhere gorgeous as ever, cheering Doug on! xo :)

"Even when you log off they stay with you"...... so true my friend xo :)

Hi Kaybee! I guess Thoughts really is a lot like life. There are always idiots and schitt-disturbers everywhere you go. Sometimes we just have to look a little harder for the good stuff :)

Yes Boots I know that many people are thinking about Doug right now. I wrote a post on him last night. I did not see this post till this morning. It goes to show that many others have seen the true measures of what he has done. Thank you...this was very kind of you:)
