I've been thinking about roe's post about the young bloggers who seem to be flocking to this site. Some of them are very talented writers, no question. Some...meh! Not so much. But who am I to judge?
What worries me is that some of us are keeping them in mind when we write - watching what we say, minding our P's and Q's (whatever that means), while others of us...meh! Not so much.
Now I know that it SHOULD be the responsibility of people's parents to govern what they do online, but let's get real here: they don't.
Is it up to us to suggest to these younguns to go play somewhere else? Is it up to us to ask our fellow bloggers with, say, a propensity for writing graphic sexual blogs to go play somewhere else? No, it's not. But should we anyway?
I know there is no way to place age restrictions on sites like this. Well, you're welcome to try, but these kids are a lot smarter than we are - they can dodge their way around almost any roadblock we can throw up. Is it even our place to try?
I'll be the first to admit, I plucked a rather steamy submission off of today's "popular" list (ugh - I hate that word!). All the while I was reading, I kept thinking about little missy in the 7th grade who was probably also reading it. My initial reaction was to drop a comment asking (politely) that the author of the blog go play somewhere more appropriate for this type of writing. There are lots of sites for it...(I've heard)...
Then it hit me - who am I? The Blog Nazi?? What right have I to ask someone to leave? Just because I know there are children who are going to read this post and many others like it, is it my place to try to protect them when, quite obviously, their parents don't??
Say it with me: "No, BootLady, it's not!"
So what to do? Nothing much I CAN do, really...except vent my contempt for parents who can't be bothered to supervise their kids while they're online!
If you ARE such a parent, here's what I want you to do:
Stand in front of a mirror.
Hold up your left hand and make a fist.
Now extend your thumb and your index finger, and place your thumb on your forehead.

LOL... I whole heartedly agree. As a parent myself, I have noticed the increase of youth *cough* *cough* and as you know I do like writing the odd steamy one (well I hope it's not too odd), and seriously I have been holding back....
I guess what we should do is put our disclaimer at the top, but in saying that, when I was younger (oh I know such a long time ago! LOL) , if I was told something wasn't suitable for my eyes/ears etc. I was immediately curious.
I guess we all have to just be US, and hmmmm I don't know. We can't change, we all have a freedom of speech (write) so I guess so long as we don't post PORN we are ok?

I will not hold back, nor will I flag my stuff...I mean that just draws more attention to it! We are not the ones who should be parenting these kids, their parents should! It is ridiculous the amount of kids on here, their parents just must have no clue!

Well as you know I am not afraid of letting em know what I think, especially if their parents aren't willing to take the time to do it..I look at Thoughts as I do my house, in here you follow the rules or go somewhere else..People and that includes kids have to take responsibility for there actions.

I dunno, Easy, I think we should be able to post whatever we like. If kids are reading it, they're doing worse online, I have no doubt.
Dougie! Um...the steamy post...when did you say? :P
Hi Rajah - I agree. The flags and raunchy titles just grab their interest.
Hey Wayne - I halfway think that Thoughts is just the flavour of the month for this new wave of younguns. Fortunately they have very short attention spans for the most part and will be gone as soon as another shiny object appears on the horizon. Having said that, though, if they are here to blog seriously, regardless of their age, I welcome them with open arms.

If the stories they read were the realistic ones it may be a good cautionary tale.
Dontcha think?

It's a thin dividing line between being responsible and not being territorial. On the whole, I think, as you have said, there are so many sites for them to give vent to their own thoughts, that I can't quite understand why they choose here. I also find it difficult to read something very mature and then find the writer is 14. Personally, I can't reply to that as I am way off that sphere. Oh dear, that sounds bad of me, doesn't it?

People should not have to watch what the say or how they say it just because there younger people in here. Its a " buyer beware " world here in " thoughts ".
If you don't like the topic, don't read the threat or blog.
If you don't like who wrote it, don't read the thread or blog.
If you don't like the language, don't read the thread or blog.
I know you get my " drift ".

Hmmm, circe - you have a point there...
I'm with ya there, overthehill. It never fails to amaze me how some of these young bloggers write so well and sound so wise. There are a few who sound like they carry the weight of great age on their shoulders. Then there are the ones who write in text-speak or whatever you call that garbled mess, a spew shock-provoking swill. PS - nah, it doesn't sound bad at all!
Sir Knight: All I can say to that is "amen!" :)

You reminded me of one of my blogs where I wrote something not meant for young people's eyes and a fifteen year old commented me....I felt like an idiot. I continue to write what I think, though, because it is the reason I started blogging to begin with...I must admit, it is always in the back of my mind who may or may not be reading it.

i started blogging for my own reasons and now i have come to rather enjoy it.
i get graphic and morally dicey so i edit myself to be not 'too' overboard and to a code of what i think is ok to post...that's not everything that goes on in my head.
but who reads it (or doesn't), i dont't care. i do it for me first.
when it's particularly odd, i add a disclaimer at the front. that's just my take on it.
if there is a sense of community, then the community needs to 'police' itself and, especially, watch out for young members who could get themselves in trouble. at least, i hope so.
cheers boots! that's a thought provoking post. thank you.

Great post, Boots, I have noticed an increase in young bloggers (some older than me, I'm only 15 for God's sake!) writing silly or inappropriate content in their blogs, but I generally keep my words to myself. That's probably because I think other people can say things better than I can, and people would more than likely take older people seriously, but that's besides the point. I guess a lot of these younger, stupider bloggers just want some quick attention. They usually get it, too, but not quite the type of attention they were looking for.

This is actually a bit ridiculous, not to offend. This is an older post but I figured I'd peruse the selection and what should I come across? A post suggesting people on Thoughts.com watch what they write because there are younger children here? Or worse yet, be prevented from accessing the site entirely? I think there's something here that should be cleared up...
Thoughts.com was not, when I first came here, a place for people to post their erotica stories. There /are/ websites for that, and this isn't really one. They will not place an age restriction for specifically that reason. This isn't a porn site, it's a blog site, and it should stay that way. Am I implying people can't post their erotica stories? No. People can post what they please.
However, us "young 'uns" are not going to go "play somewhere else" because people are posting their erotica on the wrong website.
Cheers.

Just a quick note...
There is a fine line between erotica and posting that you did the bedroom tango with your favorite woman/man the other evening. Erotica, in my opinion, should not be here. Real life events pertaining to you in some manner? Go for it.
