 Scribbles Challenge #7
The World Outside My Window

In my favourite chair I sit by the open window. My old guitar is propped against my knee, waiting. The coffee didn’t turn out so well this morning, but it warms me all the same. A gust of autumn air skirls in, stirring my hair a little, and bringing to me the scent of fallen leaves just beginning to decay. Such an enchanting aroma.

Across the street a startled squirrel chirps his accusations at the woman who walks her dog below. The woman is smoking; the dog needs a bath. The squirrel drops the walnut he was planning to hide for the winter. It bounces downward through the branches, hits the ground, and rolls.

Two doors up, Mr. Norland steps out onto his porch to retrieve the morning paper. He still hasn’t fixed that loose plank. He still hasn’t done a lot of things, if Mrs. Norland is to be believed.

Somewhere on the next street over, a baby cries. Again. His mother? nanny? will leave him screaming until he tires. I hope he will learn love one day.

A truck goes by. I don’t think this one passed the emmissions test. The driver is playing the country station. It puts me off the tune I was composing in my head. My guitar will wait for me a while longer, I suppose.

I think I might venture out this morning. The smell of rain has finally gone from the air. The window sill is warm today. Sunshine brings me joy. I will walk to the market and pick up a few things for dinner. It’s a beautiful day for an adventure!

It was god’s cruel joke to take my sight.

Ah, but who’s laughing now?

(This is for Ian, my amazing brother, who is a source of constant inspiration for me)

What can I say. The ending blew me away. I immediately went back and re-read the entire work in light of the last line. So much I want to say ... but not a single word or sentence is forming in my mind. A million written words are powerless to express the grandeur and emotion contained in this masterpiece. Peace.

Wonderful observations of ordinary, everyday events with a not so ordinary ending. You're a dark horse sometimes BL!

The ending took me by surprise; so much so that I immediately went back and reread your story twice more. I agree with what the others have uttered, you are a gifted.

At last! I was beinning to think you wre going to pass up Challenge 7. Glad you didn't.

The acid test of writing for me is - do you want to read it again? Like many others here, I was compelled to read it again. We live in a visual world, and so easily trick ourselves into thinking its always like that.

This is genius, girl. More please!

(PS, I used to have an angry grey squirrel that lived in the tree outside my office. Man, did that rodent need a course of screech therapy.)

Wow was the first word that came to mind and sweet is the second word that came to mind. Boot, very very nicely done. I re-read after reading the ending like the others.
