Well now...here's a little conundrum for ya:
As is my nature, I will of course, babble a bit before I get to the point here...
I've read a few bloggerisms of late remarking on the phenomenon of "friend collecting." A "friend collector" is someone who lobs friend requests to anyone and everyone so that their friends lists will be fluffed up and give the appearance of popularity. If you haunt such places as Facebook or MySpace, you'll have seen this in action. It's a little sad, really.
Having said this, I should probably explain that I will never say "no thanks" to someone who sends a friends request unless I haven't got clue-friggin'-one who they are (not necessarily a criteria on it's own) AND they are, in my opinion, a "friend collector."
I've heard people say that they won't have someone on their list if they haven't EARNED the title of "friend." I suppose this is a noble attitude and I agree that the word "friend" should not be thrown around lightly. It's a bit like the word "love." It's borderline sacred to me.
On the other hand, if someone sends me a friend request, maybe it's someone who I don't know YET and who wants to be friends. I kinda like that! I am definitely not going to hit the eject button on someone who extends a sincere offer of buddyness. (Yes, I've been known to invent new words on occassion!)
I've had friend requests from some really awesome people whom I did not previously know. It made me check them out, read their blogs, and discover that I enjoyed reading what they had to say. It brought them to my attention in such a nice way that I was, in the end glad to call them "friend."
I've also had requests from collectors, and even one spammer! The spammer got a fat NO in the forehead! Spammers don't deserve friends!! They are just like gnats - they are extremely annoying, but thankfully, have a very short life-span.
Hang in there - I'm finally arriving at my conundrum!
I logged in this morning and discovered that I have a new pending friends request. I had no idea who this blogger was, so I checked him out. Imagine my astonishment when I discovered that it's from a cartoon character!
What to do? I've never been friends with a cartoon character before, so the novelty of it kind of appeals to me. I'm not normally a judgemental person. I'm oblivious to such things as colour, race, religious beliefs, species, so who am I to cast aspersions if a cartoon gets a sudden urge to blog and make friends? I don't care who you are, if you make a sincere gesture of friendship, I'm in! Besides, he's quite nicely drawn and seems to have good manners, so what that hell?
If he turns out to be one of those psychotic serial killer cartoons, though, I'm deleting his cartoon ass! |

Hey BL - I agree with you, I don't like knocking back friend requests, but I will go along a cull my list, when I find they don't comment to me, or even say hi once in awhile.
And as for Mr October .. lol.. he's on my lists, I think he's fresh and different, and well drawn character! lol.
Maybe he'll become famous one day, like Garfield, or Charlie Brown?
:)

Yeah, I agree with you here. That's pretty much why I quit Myspace and whatever, just random people friend requesting you and then jsut never saying anything.. I've run into a few on thoughts, myself, it's very annoying. Even the ones where if you rea their blog, they just immediately send a request and say/do nothing in reply.
And I didn't know cartoon people made blogs here, I thought that was more a Myspace thing. :P

Well, I've never had a spammer want to be friends with me before - dont know whether that means that I'm lucky, or even a spammer doesnt wanna be my friend, lol...I did, however, send one a request the other day, but not to be friends - to keep his spamming arse off my blog, lol...unfortunately I may have made a twat of myself, because I miss typed and wrote 'smapper', a word I actually prefer...
Sigh...I cant even blame pregnancy for my floopiness (Geordie word) anymore...or can I?? Lol xxx agreed though...the word 'friend' should not be tossed around 'willy nilly' (love that saying...)
Anyway, now I'm just rambling.....lol xxx

Hiya cheb! "Willy Nilly" is one we use around here too - I'm sure we punked it from you Brits, though. "Floopiness" is awesome! I'm gonna incorporate that one into my personal dictionary!

I love the word smappers and floopiness and buddyness. I reject people on myspace because I'm afraid its one of my students in a clandestine name trying to creep into my inner sanctum of myspace privateness. On thoughts I'm not so picky--but I get very few requests so I can't say that I share your conundrum or feel your pain--I kinda envy it in a weird way. lol

On Thoughts, I will accept any friend request from a fellow blogger. If it is someone who merely comments, I don't feel as comfortable because some of my posts are "friends-only" and I feel like someone who does not blog him/herself should not have access to my more private thoughts - it's a "fair is fair" issue. I am, however, very picky about my friend requests on Facebook since my real information is available on my facebook profile - full name, employer etc. I only want "real" friends to have access to that info. Never got a request here from a cartoon character. A bit insulted...

Oops! I just noticed that I typed Georgies instead of Geordies...sorry cheb!
Hi cwzywbt (I like your name btw)! I often create new words when the old ones are to yawnular. Just something I've always done! lol
Meri - I completely agree with your "fair is fair" comment. I actually find Facebook a little scary because a lot of people put all of their real info in there, including addresses and phone numbers - this IS still the internet after all...
Hi Mezlie - I honestly had no idea there were cartoon people using the internet. How do they type with only three fingers? lol

Funny how reading your blog on " friends" made something come to mind.
I have never been asked to be anyone friend .
I've always done the asking.
now I'm starting to think that just maybe people agreed just to be polite.
And thats created my own " conundrum".

Well, circe, I hope my cartoon character friend's creator has an eraser handy...just in case! lol
Sir Knight: I was honoured to be asked to be your friend. If you recall, it happened during the time when the friend thing was broken, so I had to ask you back. I get now why you "considered my request" for so long! lol

:::Clapping::: I totally agree with you on this one. I have a MYSPACE, however I've gotten so many request from random no bodies - its a bit annoying. They never talk to you and it just makes their page look good. I actually tried deleting my page, however - I forgot my password to my old e-mail address, so I cant get the conformation code to offically delete the damn thing. I figured I'd just delete what I could and leave an empty page. But neways good post and who really has 5,397 friends anyway? Geez, I'm so loney compared to my few...Ha!

I will just say MySpace was a waste of time for me...unless you count getting some offer from an online Tshirt company to do some sort of work for them in hopes of making money...doubtful. I sent out more letters(as I always DID) than I ever received trying to connect with people. I guess either I didn't say the right thing or it wasn't worth my effort.
Hey, what's wrong with a cartoon wanting to be a friend?:P I take offense to that statement:) I'd oogle a chebtastic pic, cartoon or otherwise, if someone used it as an avatar:P Now I have a new appreciation for that word/name:P Catchy.
