I heard a really distressing tale about Facebook last night. This happened last weekend. Apparently everybody who was online and friends of (let's call him) Person X received a message from him saying that he was in trouble and needed help. The message said that he was in City Y (a plausible distance from where he lived) and that he'd just been mugged. The message was interractive, meaning Person X was actually online and conversing "live" about this with his "friends" using the Facebook IM. The conversation was believable in almost every way.
Long story short, friends of Person X were distressed by what happened and any that could, wired money to this guy to get him home. The friends that actually phoned Person X to see what was going on, learned that he not only wasn't IN City Y, but he hadn't been mugged at all. In fact, he hadn't even been online all day.
The people who fell for this are not stupid people. They're just unquestioningly loyal friends. One person sent this guy $800 because that's what his "friend" asked him to do. When he later contacted the police about it, he was told to "get in line."
So. Apparently Facebook is hackable, and, if you have enough information about yourself on there, Buddy Hack-It, can BE you and sucker your kind-hearted friends into doing things.
Please people. BE CAREFUL with your personal information online!! The cyber world is FULL of predators!
