 Facebook Warning
I heard a really distressing tale about Facebook last night.  This happened last weekend.  Apparently everybody who was online and friends of (let's call him) Person X received a message from him saying that he was in trouble and needed help.  The message said that he was in City Y (a plausible distance from where he lived) and that he'd just been mugged.  The message was interractive, meaning Person X was actually online  and conversing "live" about this with his "friends" using the Facebook IM.  The conversation was believable in almost every way.

Long story short, friends of Person X were distressed by what happened and any that could, wired money to this guy to get him home.  The friends that actually phoned Person X to see what was going on, learned that he not only wasn't IN City Y, but he hadn't been mugged at all.  In fact, he hadn't even been online all day.

The people who fell for this are not stupid people.  They're just unquestioningly loyal friends.  One person sent this guy $800 because that's what his "friend" asked him to do.  When he later contacted the police about it, he was told to "get in line."

So.  Apparently Facebook is hackable, and, if you have enough information about yourself on there, Buddy Hack-It, can BE you and sucker your kind-hearted friends into doing things.

Please people.  BE CAREFUL with your personal information online!!  The cyber world is FULL of predators!

Thanks for the heads up!!

You're very welcome, melissa. I just hate to think of people getting hosed by something like this.

I have FB Boots but its mainly to play with, I would never send money via facebook to ANYONE. I figure if someone needs my help, they will call me direct. This is t'internet people, even Facebook. I heard the story too Boots, It makes me wonder about the gullibility of people NOT to check.
Posted by  Waasyon  on 2009-10-25 09:00:38

Exactly, Waasyon. I guess that's what I'm trying to say here. If someone you think you know on your Facebook asks you for money, PHONE THEM and find out for sure!

I find it even scarier that you've heard about this happening and you're on the other side of the world. This happened locally here to people I actually know.

Facebook.

lol.

I love Facebook. I really do. Ain't nothin wrong with Facebook, as long as you know how to work it to your benefit. It's great!!!
Posted by  bugsyS  on 2009-10-25 09:28:35

I agree, bugsy, it IS a great thing when used properly. As long as you know the pitfalls and are very careful about what you say and do on there, it's a great networking tool.
Posted by  BootLady  on 2009-10-25 10:20:41

I use Facebook to interact with my kids ... and for a few other folks I wouldn't see otherwise...but I never got addicted and I don't spend much time there. I suppose this is a good lesson to learn, so thanks for posting it, Bootsy!
Posted by  funfreak  on 2009-10-25 09:36:51

I just want people to be wary, funfreak. You just never know who you're talking to online. Even when it appears in every way to be someone you know well.
Posted by  BootLady  on 2009-10-25 10:24:25

YUP!! FaceBook has been and continues to be notorious for hackability. Not a place to be accepting all kinds of unknown friends.... and those friends accepted you best have other forms of contact with them other than simply relying upon a much too open environment.

Well done with posting yet another warning.
Posted by  UniversalSeductress  on 2009-10-25 10:59:21

Thanks, US. I didn't know any of this stuff before I heard about it last night. Kinda creepy, eh? You just never know.
Posted by  BootLady  on 2009-10-25 13:15:48

Well I think I find it less creepy becuz I do have a better understanding of the FaceBook platform and the unfortunate way they allow too many what is called: APPS to be accessed via anyone's account. It is complicated but all those little apps are 'breaks' that make it much easier to breach.....

And now I see poor Frags has again taken up the cross of Hacking becuz he misunderstands what security features CAN be built into various platforms for social networking sites.

Anyway ~ YOU post is good to help those who actually have not thought about how they DO need to protect themselves....and also question out of character kinds of thingies such as this situation.

The situation above as I said before might have been avoided had everyone interconnected had outside ways to contact one another..... for surely someone would have attempted to even 'call' the person asking for money...and at that very moment that person could have circumvented anything from being sent erroneously.

Posted by  UniversalSeductress  on 2009-10-26 13:21:35

i do have facebook, and this is scary to know!! i do not post pics of myself on there though, or much info. i have many childhood friends but that is it. this is making me question the whole facebooking thing now... eek! thank you for sharing this, i would have not known this at all!
Posted by  littlespirit  on 2009-10-25 13:02:03

You're very welcome, littlespirit. Just be careful, and, when in doubt, phone! :)
Posted by  BootLady  on 2009-10-25 13:16:57

I better get some friends from facebook. All my real friends are broke.
Posted by  Conflict  on 2009-10-25 13:41:40

That's not gonna work, Conflict, cuz now I've gone and warned everyone! Sorry, my friend :)
Posted by  BootLady  on 2009-10-25 15:59:18

Everything is hackable... Facebook is a hive for scum and vilaney like mos eisly space port. I would have thought it was a joke. Facebook is the last place I would look for help! I would think most of my friends would use a public phone, as they still exist honest... Did no one think how if he had been mugged was he able to contact facebook? Did they not take his phone? I would have taken his phone, its the easiest bit to get quick cash. So I am sorry but I think the friends who sent money may have been good friends but still silly!

Ya Dokta:)
Posted by  yadokta  on 2009-10-25 13:59:52

Well, Dok, I guess it's a good lesson not to trust so blithely. I know a lot of people these days who communicate pretty much by techno-widgets alone. Conversation is a dying art, but that's another blog for another day.

I gather that part of the scam was that the phone was stolen too. Which begs the question "How is it that you're online telling me all of this?" The thing is, even though the person said the phone was stolen, I'd have called it anyway if only to cuss out the thief and tell him to give it back :P
Posted by  BootLady  on 2009-10-25 16:03:49

umm, I wouldn't even trust my own mum!

Ya Dokta:)

YOU mean he could not just envision a little monitor in his mind and then type out...HELP send money!! lmtlsao

EXACTLY!!

Yes I know Face book is hackable (so Is Thoughts.com, and Friend's reunited Meh where there's a will there's a way). I know people make fun of the fact I had my accounts hacked but It did happen it was not a conspiracy theory.
What pisses me off is when people do not give you the benefit of the doubt and listen.
I'm the sort of person that would rather people make up their own minds, and if people choose to be ignorant that is their choice and their funeral.

Respects.

I believe that probably everything is hackable, Sara. And I believe you if you say you were hacked. I did blog about jumping to the "conspiracy theory" conclusion because it seemed at the time that it was all the rage. It turned out that it wasn't hacking in most of those cases, but a simple matter of faking a similar-looking screen name. I offered it up as something to check first before starting a panic. I know how the lemming effect works, and if I can slow it down at all before we lose any cherished bloggers, I will :)

I knew where you were coming from with that post, I could see your intentions were good Boots :).
For what its worth I admire you I was not aiming that statement at you but in another direction :).x.

Sara ~

YOUR situation was with very 'special circumstances' ~ I never once doubted your accounts were breached.... BUT to randomly 'hack' someone's account of whom the 'hacker' does not even know.... that is an entire different topic.

What Boots describes here is not at all the type of breach of security you experienced. Yours was and remains a disgusting abusive breach that you were traumatized with if even only for a while... and frankly....I would wish there could be some laws to deal with what that pond scum did to you. And likely there was and is.

(((HUGS)))

Thankyou US I realize that, It makes no difference though It was still achievable whether for Malice or fraud, that is the worrying part, its not the reasons, its the fact it is Indeed achievable at all!... :).

I appreciate your friendship greatly thankyou :).x.

I am always careful cause I just don't trust the internet. I come from an age where we didn't share too much and maybe it's a good thing, I don't know, but you're right to give people a warning.

Hi over! When I see stuff like this happen to people who are halfway intelligent, it scares me. I try to remind 'net users as often as I can to BE CAREFUL! I guess I can't be everyone's mother hen, but it won't stop me from trying! :)

I only talk to my grand daughters and nieces on facebook, but like most things, it is hackable,Just a short time ago twitter was attacked and caused it to be shut down for several hours.

Oh I call them regularly but they are always posting new photos and things like that, I hardly ever use facebook , I'm glad I get email notifications, that way I don't have to go on it, only when they post something.

Yup! We use the Internet more and more, but at what risk? So many pitfalls...

good thing I cut that account off.. actually, I got something like that in an email, from one of my babysitters a while back .. but it didn't "sound" like her.. and she mass emailed everyone back a few days later saying her email account got hacked.. so.. and this was 2 years ago. Imagine all that's been gotten away. Scary. You can't be so sure these days.. good going for those that called the guy. Great post. xx

Thanks, Lola. From what I'm hearing, this scam has been around a while. I guess the more of us that know about it, the less chance it has of succeeding :)

SO JUST TO JUMP ON THE WAGON LATE HERE (GIGGLES TRIUMPHANTLY)
so boots my friend what you are saying is that the MIGHTY FACEBOOK
can be hacked into, but what everyone on my back has been telling me
if i am to believe them, is that there has never been such hackers on
thoughts, and indeed i was stupid to even sugest that it could possibly
happen here.
hmmmm i think i will blog this comment and see what response i will get LOL.
it just seems logical to me that if these hacker scum can hack into private accounts on the almighty and great FACEBOOK, then surely we would be stupid to assume that they would not do the same on thoughts, being as thoughts is a much smaller site.

Frags, I never said that Thoughts.com hasn't ever been hacked. I honestly have no idea about that. What I said was that maybe we should look at the other possibilites before we freak everyone out and scare them. You seem to enjoy whipping everyone into a frenzy, which apparently you're about to do again. All I'm saying is that it's not necessary.

This post is meant as a warning to people, not as a jump-off for another freak show. I'm sorry if you still don't feel vindicated but as far as I'm concerned there's really nothing to vindicate.
Posted by  BootLady  on 2009-10-26 13:12:27

nah boots i don't do the frenzy thing anymore it is just a bit of fun but i will go remove it if you think i will upset folks.
thanks for the heads up

".....SO JUST TO JUMP ON THE WAGON LATE HERE (GIGGLES TRIUMPHANTLY)....."

THOSE words more than set off my SIX ALARM red flags about Frags!!

DAAAAAAAYUM ~ why would someone with a GOOD heart feel triumph IF he were even right.... which yet again ~ here we go again!!

For now I am totally PISSED ~ so I will need to regain my composure in order to use my highly intelligent mind .....

I dont know which is harder ~ tryin to explain enuff about 'hacking' to keep people safe and yet not realese every little technical detail.... OR ~ trying to give this Frags enuff loving guidance to help him ffind some sort of peace.......

Boots sorry for taking over your post.

I guess if someone wanted to find me through facebook they could. I have my security set high and I don't download too many apps at all...keep it simple. I love posting pics for my friends and family and use the email feature too. so sad if it was to be corrupted.
