| Principal Resigns After Formation of Gay Club

Due to misinformation and just plain ignorance a South Carolina High School principal, Eddie Walker, is resigning from his position. Walker plans on resigning as he personally opposes the formation of a Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) in the school, his statement is "I feel the formation of a Gay/Straight Alliance Club at Irmo High school implies that students joining the club will have chosen to or will choose to engage in sexual activity with members of the same sex, opposite sex, or members of both sexes,".

Did you read it? Did it take a couple reads through for it make sense? Does it make your head spin? Yeah. That was my reaction also... I still can't believe it. For those of you that don't know being a bi/gay/transgendered/transexual/asexual teen can be pure hell. What makes it hell? Lack of support. GSA provides the support that these young people desperately need, even if they can't get it from home. Yes, if you are not gay/bi/whatever or know someone well who is that has been through it, this may be hard for you to understand. Kids get beat up and harassed everyday because of their sexual orientation; clubs like GSA provide a support network for those kids.
I am not going to lie, when I read the principles statement I giggled a bit and thought, "Seriously, this man has to be joking". But then I remember that he wasn't... and I got scared. If there is one man out there like him there is a million. No matter how many facts and statistics you throw at people about the harassment gay/bi teens go through, there are people out there that will still not understand. And they won't understand until they walk in the shoes of a gay/bi teen that is harassed daily.
