Well, I didn't come across any situations today where I could add a kindness, but someone did one for me, so for that I am grateful. I "inherited" a dog when I took over as the director of this rescue I run. Spike and I have never been in the same city, much less the same room, but when the woman who adopted him prior to my directorship suddenly decided to return him (no fault of his own), I had to do something quick--even though I live more than 6 hours from where he was living. Someone stepped up with temporary foster care but a more permanent solution needed to be found, and I *really* didn't want to bring him here to my house. I already have 4 of my own and one dog we are fostering for a deployed soldier--not to mention 2 other foster dogs for this rescue (both of whom have kennel cough!) AND I would have had to pack my kids into the car and drive 3 hours each way to pick him up--not their idea of the way to spend a day off school! Well, the temp foster mom has decided that she really can keep Spike until he finds his forever home. (She already put up $500 to get his and his brother Ike's dental work done!) Until you have worked in the rescue arena--where there are far more dogs needing help than foster care to house them--you really can't appreciate this! Believe me--it's a huge weight off my mind. Spike really needs stability. And between all of the dogs, our cats, the kids and my job and the lack of an available husband for the next 14 months, failing a foster dog is the most stressful.
