What's in a funk? You know that place you get to where nothing feels right, nothing seems right, nothing looks right. A place where the colors are dull, the air is stale and you can't seem to conjure up anything to be happy about. Some songwriters write melancholy melodies in a funk. Some people try to give it a color - blue funk, black funk. Some try to medicate it - with drugs, alcohol, food, sex, work, spending - anything to escape it.
Of course, without knowing what it is or why it exist at different times in your life, you are doomed to get back in and go back to a funk. I've discovered that it's not necessary, and very tiring too, to fight the funk when I don't know its source or its root. I wind up going in circles and merely covering up one funky place with another funky place - and sooner or later no matter how much make-up you put on, how many pair of shoes you wear out trying to run away from it, or how many times you try to deoderize without cleaning - the funk will emerge. It will catch you because it never really left you. Now what are you going to do...if you're not careful, the funk will turn to blues.
All around me...people are in funks. Some by choice, some by circumstance but they don't have to stay there. I have to remind myself daily not to get caught up in other's funks and to keep my soul and spirit clean and healthy and active, so as to stay out of my own funks. It's not easy. I won't lie. There are days when it seems so much simpler to give in to the funk. But.....I can't.
I can't let no funk turn to blues and steal my muse,
Gving me an excuses not to choose -
A better way to spend my day living, loving
And increasing my faith.
Funk comes around
Tthreatens to bring you down
Make up your mind
Don't give it any time
Face it and say
NOT TODAY
