 Living Abroad
I am a foreigner who lives in the Philippines.  I have lived here for a good many years now.  It is both the most enjoyable and the most miserable time of my entire life.  Somehow, I have managed to survive here.  I have a job, a family and many friends.  I am allowed to stay here for the rest of my natural life, if I so desire.  I am living a dream.  Many people have tried to live in far away places and almost all of them never achieve this desire.  I live in a place that is a stark contrast from the land of my birth.  The people appear to be happy go lucky and que sera sera, living as if they don't have a care in the world.  They are energetic and will work hard if they need to, but have no problems doing less if they can get away with it.  For the average Filipino, appearance is everything.  A person is what they appear to be, not what they truely are deep within.  Their society is completely vertical in nature.  Those who are higher are given respect and consideration by those of lower position.  Because of this, people are constantly trying to climb higher in the rankings in order to achieve a greater level of comfort and wealth.  The laugh a lot and spend lots of time tallking in small groups.  The are reverent people with a deep seated conciousness of God.  Their speech is most common as they review who said what or what out landish thing any given person receintly did.  They closely regulate their conduct and are super in tune with the feelings and reactions of others.  So important are smooth interpersonal relationships, that they shun even the very appearance of doing or saying anything that would cause harm or embarrasement to another.  They are generally fatelistic.  They bend with the joys or sufferings of life, endure whatever comes their way and continue on with their lives until the day of their death.  Yet, if you could see inside, things are much different there.  They are often filled with bitterness and hatred.  They are really self serving and seek to get all that they can for themselves without any regard whatsoever for others that may get hurt in their quest.  They are often times overwhelmed by feelings of being inadequate, ugly and worthless.  They often must endure much sorrow and hurt in the name of peace.  Like wounded soldiers, inwardly, they are crippled and disfigured.  They have a form of godliness but deny any life changing power that may be contained within a relationship with the almighty.
