What a week-end it has been. Good times and some times for the tears. Friday was a beautiful day the baby lamb doing well, except for the fact that he just can't stand with out help. I'm a little puzzled by this and had decided that I should take him to the vet on Saturday. I've dealt with lambs before, other peoples lambs mostly, and I am also aware of a disease called White Muscle Disease and I think he might have that. But I'm hoping for the best and that he is still just to weak.
So, Saturday I take him to the Vet whose office is just a few feet from my store, Doc and I know each other quite well since we both are in Animal Health field.
First thing they did was drawl some blood and sure enough he has white muscle disease, he will never walk. He is blind and has a host of other problems too. Something with his brain that I'm still researching. Doc and I talked it over, and I had him put down. It was really hard for me. I wish I just didn't care so much. I would never make a good farmer. I took him back to my place and buried him in the woods. I went to Lowes and bought some cement and made a little wooded frame and mixed the cement and made a marker for his grave. (I do this all the time for animals) I used marbles to spell out his name (Snowflake) and put the date on it. Said a few prayers and went on.
Sunday I went to church and when I was on my way home I saw a bunch of blackberry's ready to be picked. So I went home and got a couple containers and picked some berries. I looked up a few recipes for blackberry jam and I would need 6 cups of berries. Well I had about 3 cups. So, a friend and I went into the mountain and looked for more. We found tons, some really nice bushes and some not so nice. We picked for about 2 hours. I'm so afraid of snakes that I was watching every step. Thank goodness I did not find one. When we got back to my place first thing I did was measure to make sure we would have enough for a go. And we had enough to make 3 batches. So away we cooked. It took awhile, and we took turns stirring. The recipe said to cook till boiling and when it sheeted off the spoon it was ready to be put in jars. We had no idea what sheeted off the spoon meant. So we just kept cooking it. Until I looked at the spoon and ran my finger over it and all the jam just went with my finger leaving none on the spoon. Ah ha, I think that is what that means. So we put it into the jars and every jar sealed. Yeah!!! It was a fun time with a good friend and a good way to end my week-end.
Hope all of you had a good week-ending too!
